WHO IS KORIE?
KORIE, a Nigerian Pop / Soul / Afro-Pop artist, real name Kindness Okorie, a singer/song writer/instrumentalist/performing/recording artist. She was born on June 13 in Lagos. A native of Imo state, Nigeria. She lives in Lagos.
She has a mission to empower people of all identities, ages, genders, and economic backgrounds to become more self-aware, and discover their innate and limitless potential through her music.
"with music, I give to people more than I can do ordinarily. I can give butterflies to the soul, wings to the mind, flight to the imaginations and life to everything. I am music and music is me."
THE JOURNEY
The Interest: My journey into music started at the age of 5. I grew up listening to gospel songs due to my Christian background. I started writing songs at the age of 6. Growing up I have always wanted to be on TV, and wished I could play a music instrument. So I started picking interest in guitar as I grew. Music to me was just so intense and emotional.
The Challenge and Victory: I could not afford the cost of a guitar. But out of determination, I drew a guitar on paper and started watching YouTube videos. It was ridiculous but my love for music made it surmountable. I often downloaded videos from YouTube to learn to play the guitar. I wish I had bought my first guitar at 14, just like Don Williams. But I waited for another five years, when 19. Smiles.
Learning got more practical as I continued learning at midnight for 14 months nonstop. I did vocal training too on watching related YouTube videos. Now, I can mesmerize you with the strings.
I found a niche for myself as I evolved from a singer to a musician. I have always felt like I didn't fit in anywhere, but it was meant to be, I wasn't ever supposed to fit in, but stand out.
You can't imagine the power of passion, what drive can do, and what you can achieve with determination and how far you can grow watching YouTube videos. It is so incredible. Today, I'm proud to be a self-taught singer, songwriter and instrumentalist. I feel I can achieve the impossible! The kind of feeling I want for my audience with my music.
