I plan to find a stable job in a medical office or emergency room once I graduate.
Ethics- moral principles that govern a person's behavior or the conducting of an activity.
Values- a person's principles or standards of behavior; one's judgment of what is important in life.
Morals- a person's standards of behavior or beliefs concerning what is and is not acceptable for them to do.
Character- the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.
Core values- the root beliefs that a person or organization operates from. They help people decide what's right and what's wrong
One ethical decision comes to mind. It was my first retail job; I was 17 and working at a Journey’s shoe store. I got along with my co-workers and even made a couple of friends. One day I saw my coworker/ friend stealing from the store. She told me she had done it a few times. Even though she was a friend, I had to tell my manager what had happened. Since the store had a quarterly inventory, we could lose our jobs if our numbers were way off. When we did do the inventory, it was a couple of hundred dollars off than past inventory.
- Focusing on behaviors or events and not on personalities. Sometimes we get caught up in our emotions and can get our feelings hurt instead of focusing on the issue. Remember to describe the event and not generalize, and instead of saying when you do this, try saying when this happens.
- Make sure that you listen when your coworkers are talking. Many of us just think about what we are going to say next instead of listening to what the person is saying. And to show that you are listening try to rephrase what they said to make sure you fully understand what they said.
- Using Respectful communication. Doesn't matter what the person's job is, communicate in a respectful way.
- Remember to be empathetic to everyone's situation. You don't know what someone is going through outside of work. So if your coworker is having a rough time be empathetic.
- Identifying sources of conflict. If you have a coworker who's consistently at the start of drama. It's important to find out who it is and talk to a manager or someone in Human Resources.
- Have a neutral approach. If an issue arises, it's important not to take any sides and try to listen to both sides of the issues.
- Be positive. If you are positive everyday at work that positivity can spread to others in the office too.
- Talking about our wellness and stress has been helpful. Learning about the different kinds of stress and ways to manage it was something I could use at work and in other aspects of life.
- The job opportunities assignment helped because I was able to start a list of jobs around me, as well as see what qualifications I need to get the job I want after graduation.
- Researching what makes a good employer. I always thought a job is a job and if I get hired at least I'm making money. But making a list of what make a good employer gives me an idea of what to look for in a future job so I can stay at it long term instead of getting a job, working at it for a bit and realizing they don't have this or that and now I'm stuck there until I can find something else.
- Setting professional goals. It's important to write down your goals and then figure out the steps it's going to take to get to those goals. It also allows you to decide which are the most important and what order you can work on them.
- Prioritizing tasks. It also goes with the goal writings. It's important to figure out how your going to take care of the tasks you need to do to get the job you want.
