The History of Wisconsin's State Fair By: jeric m.

The first state fair was first hosted in Janesville, Wisconsin 1851, The same year the first worlds fair was in London, 1851. The opening day there were 461 entries and 18,000 spectators. Wisconsin State fair was cancelled only five years, 3 years in a row 1861-1863 due to the civil war. The State fair also cancelled in 1893 when worlds Colombian exposition held in Chicago. Once again it was cancelled during World War II, in 1945. In 1886 The Wisconsin state fair moved where it had remained for many years in West Allis. In its past the fair has been in Watertown, Fon Du Lac, Janesville, Milwaukee, and Madison.

The George Stevens farm was placed on the north side of the Greenfield ave. on the Wauwatosa township line. In 1891, Tom Fleming who led the Wisconsin Agricultural society, Bought the George Stevens farm which became home of the Wisconsin state fair. Seven years later, in 1898 Camp Harvey was built on the grounds as a staging ground for Wisconsin forces training for combat in the Spanish-American war. Since that, the fair has improved majorly, especially in the areas of livestock and agricultural, There are oftenly international visitors.

The fair park was also used in the development of aviation in Wisconsin. The first shows of man flight took place at the fair. Aircraft even raced cars, prior to World War one. A flight school and airfield were established near the north end of the park in 1912. Most interestingly, West Allis and state fair grounds are the home in which Alfred Lawson assembled the first commercial airliner in America.

The fairgrounds are also where olympic heroes are trained. Since the 1930’s west allis has been an area where ice skating is taken very seriously. Many skating champions started skating on the school park ice rinks . Skills were honed on the olympics ice rink , and its successor, the pettit ice center, is an international olympic training facility as well as a community skating rink.

State Fair also have a race car track, The Milwaukee Mile Speedway, where Indy car , NASCAR,and many other varieties of races take place. The race track was a dirt track and first opened in 1903, It was later paved in 1954.The race track is approximately one mile long(1.6km)and can seat approximately seat 37,000 spectators.

The Wisconsin State Fair is important because it has a long history behind it has been around for over 100 years. The state fair is also important because it brings people together you can meet new people and unite with your community and different people from around the state or country. You can also try new foods, rides, animals, try new activities etc.

"In order to attract the public, more and more popular entertainment was added to the standard exhibits of farm machinery, displays of produce, and competitions for prizes for the best farm animals and domestic arts products. This gallery provides highlights of those changes through time, from fire company competitions, horse races, sideshows and brass bands, to auto and motorcycle races, aeronautics shows, demolition derbies, politicians and TV/movie celebrities, Alice in Dairy land and, of course, food and amusement rides."
