The Super Spy of the Holocaust: Frank Foley By: Samantha Dubin

Early Life

Frank Foley was born November 24, 1884 in Highbridge, United Kingdom. He was the third son of Isabella and Andrew Wood Foley. As a child, Frank attended local schools such as St. Joseph's Roman Catholic School and won a scholarship to Stonyhurst College. He went to a Catholic Seminary in France to train as a priest but then transferred to the Universite de France in Poitiers to study classics and pursued an academic career. He also traveled a lot in Europe and became fluent in French and German.

Frank graduated from the Royal Military college in Sandhurst and enrolled in the army to help defend his country. He was appointed a temporary Captain in the military in 1917. One year later in 1918 he became part of a small unit of the Intelligence Corps of the United Kingdom which was responsible for recruiting and running networks of secret agents in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. During the 1920’s and 1930’s, Frank used his agents and information to get key information on the German military.

Holocaust

Frank recruited into the British Secret Intelligence Service to help make his country safer. From 1922 to 1939 he was stationed in Berlin as a passport officer. The passport officer status was just a cover as he was really working with the British Government. Frank went into concentration camps and gave jews visas so they were free to travel out of Germany. Frank even hid jews in his own apartment with him and his wife. When World War II began He returned to England but left behind for the Jews visas with instructions of how to escape Germany.

How He’s A fighter

Frank helped thousands of Jewish families escape from Berlin. If caught, Frank and his wife would have faced serious consequences - even death. But Frank valued the lives of the innocent Jews more than his own which made him a fighter.

Historical Impact

Frank saved others lives and put his own at risk . He helped Jews escape and when he left he helped others escape to continue on his legacy. He is now known as the spy who saved more than 10,000 Jews. .
