What a fabulous and busy week we had! Our study of "What is Science?" and the 5 senses was a great fun and we learned a lot! We will be continuing our study of science throughout the year as we study zoology, entymology, and ecology. This week or next we will also begin our Project Lead the Way unit on design.
We read both fiction and non-fiction books about our five senses. Eric Carle was the author and illustrator that we focused on this week for our five senses. We read many of his beautiful books and thought about which of the five senses the character would primarily use in the story. We read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", "Polar Bear, Polar Bear What Do You Hear?" "The Very Quiet Cricket", "A House for A Hermit Crab", and "Walter the Baker" just to name a few. We introduced a new Kagan structure called "Four Corners". We made it our own by creating five tables with a picture on each of one of the five senses. The sea turtles had to walk to the table that they felt fit the best with the story and discuss it with others at the same table. Then we shared our thoughts with the whole group.
In our literacy rotations we focused on the five senses. In our science center we had a sink or float experiment where they made predictions and recorded their observations. We created texture collages in the art center and worked with scented play doh to create our power words in fine motor/sensory center. At games we played "5 senses Lotto" by ourselves or with a friend. At block center we had both smooth magnatiles and rough sea turtle blocks to build with. Our book nook was filled with science books about our 5 senses.
In math this week we continued to count and compare numbers still focusing on the correct formation of our numbers. We practiced sage and scribe with large numbers to 100. The sage read 2 numbers to the scribe then the scribe wrote the numbers down and circled the number that was more. They enjoyed working with a partner! In fact we played a lot of partner games in our small group so they could get even more practice with comparing numbers. We also "wrote the room" looking for numbers to write and played "Roll and Write" our numbers to 6. We continued our five senses in our math rotations. We had smelly paint that they could use to paint over their numbers at art center. In fine motor/sensory they could trace their numbers on sand paper and then find that number of spider rings to put on a ten frame. At games they used their sense of touch to figure out what was in numbered bags and then they practiced writing the corresponding number on their worksheet. Book Nook had a "5 Little Pumpkins" retelling where they used their sense of touch and hearing.
Eric Carle inspired our "Caring Counts" lesson this week. We read "The Very Lonely Firefly" and then we talked about what lonely was. We brainstormed ways that we could reach out to someone who was lonely- they were so sweet and loving I was so proud of them! Afterwards we created cards to brighten up the day for senior citizens who may be feeling a little lonely. The cards were taken to the senior citizens who attend a day program at the Kingsley House. I am sure that they were much appreciated!
Our arts integration with Ms. Logan was a blast! We reviewed the concept of weather that we had worked on the week prior. We incorporated music into what we had learned about the weather specifically clouds. We watched the classic song "Singing in the Rain" and then we danced like we were in the rain. We listened to other songs such as "Here Comes the Sun" and focused on making our body match the music. We talked about being the different types of clouds, cumulus, stratus and cirrus and how these clouds would move.
Friday Fun Day!! We definitely had an amazing time on Friday. First off we were able to celebrate our hard work and teamwork with a stuffed animal celebration. We read to our stuffed animals during Readers Workshop. We also kept them with us for free choice. Our sense of hearing was the focus on Friday so we learned more about the science behind our hearing and then created kazoos to test out our hearing. We used our kazoos to play our state song "You Are My Sunshine". We also learned about 2 Renaissance artists, Da Vinci and Michaelangelo. We found out that Michaelangelo spent years creating the Sistine Chapel and we wanted to see what it would be like to paint the way he did- on his back. We decided to make our "Sistine Chapel" a letter "S" mural as it was the letter we had studied all week. After brainstorming things that we could paint we got right to work! We painted sea turtles, spots, suns, stars, and many other beautiful things beginning with the letter "S". It was a fun filled Friday for sure!
UPCOMING EVENTS: October 17th- Picture Retakes, October 24th- Block Party, October 25th- Field Trip to the Pumpkin Patch, October 31st- Fun Run and Fall Centers 2:00-3:00, November 6th- Professional Development for Teachers- No School
Peek Into The Week: This week we introduced our new theme in Reading, Zoology. We will be investigating animals of all kinds. This week we are focusing on living and non-living things. We will be sorting different items as well as observing both living and non-living things. We are looking forward to our field trip on Friday! Because we will be going to the Pumpkin Patch this week we will also be discussing pumpkins all week. Our letter of the week is "Pp" and our new power words are "live, they, are". In math we are focusing on correct formation of numbers 6-10 as well as different ways to make these numbers and comparing numbers.
Please take a look at the link below. This is a wish list for the entire Kindergarten to supplement our recess materials. We greatly appreciate anything that you are able to donate!
A message on behalf of the Lusher Soiree Committee to Kindergarten parents:
The Lusher Soiree is a very special night of fundraising for our
wonderful school! It will be held at Southport Hall on Friday,
November 8 at 7pm, and it's for parents only! There will be live
music, silent auction, food, cash bar, plus some great raffle prizes.
If your family owns a business (or wants to contribute to the school),
the Soiree is a great way to give back. We are still in need of
sponsorships for this event! We're also looking for silent auction
items, specifically restaurant and hotel gift cards. Visit the event
website (lushersoiree.com) to find out how to donate an item or become
a sponsor. We need the support of the Lusher community in order to
make this a successful event!
Also, tickets are on sale now! Get them at www.lushersoiree.com. Buy
them before this coming Monday, and automatically get entered to win
TWO free tickets to Voodoo Music Experience!! Winner announced this
Tuesday. Thank you so much and please reach out to us at
lushersoiree@gmail.com with any questions.
