My Name Is Charlie I'm A Least Tern

My name is Charlie.

I live on the beach with my Mom and Dad.

I'm only a few days old.

This is my Mom and my little brother. This is our home.

This is my playground. My mom says I'm safer here.

I was born over the weekend during king tides, that's what my Mom says and we almost got washed away!

Last year almost our entire colony drowned during a passing tropical storm.

This is the junk that washed up ashore.

I'm pretty little but almost three inches tall. I want to grow up big and strong like my Dad. He's off looking for fish for my brother and I.

Here I am playing.

We live outside the reservation. My Dad doesn't like the crowded area behind the ropes. My Mom says it's very dangerous out here for me and my brother.

This is my Mom.

My Mom tries to protect me from trouble. We have a code word when she spots trouble.

I lie flat on the ground and look like a rock. I don't have a desk to hide under.

My Mom says there are bad, big black birds and dogs that will eat me too. Dogs are not supposed to be on the beach.

Sometimes there are many people on the beach. Please don't step on me.

This is my Mom warning those big guys with bald heads and funny big black things sticking out of their eyes taking pictures of us. You don't want to get my Mom mad.

My Mom when she's mad

My Mom will dive bomb you and poop on you if you get too close!

This my Dad. He's bringing us food so I can grow up big and strong. I want to learn to fly and fish too!

My Mom says it will take me 19-20 days before I can learn to fly.

This is Willy. He's our neighbor.

I'm not allowed to play with Willy. My Mom says he is different! He eats worms. Yuch.

Willy is a Snowy Plover. He is really tiny, maybe only two inches tall.

Willy digs in the sand looking for his own food.

Willy is really hard to see as he is so tiny.

This is Willy's Mom. She watches out for him like my Mom.

I hope you enjoyed a tour our our neighborhood. If you come to the beach in South Florida, please watch out for us little guys. My Mom says only a few of us grow up. I hope I'm one.
