Johnston Community Primary School Friday, 12th May

Dear Parents/Guardians,

A short weekly newsletter this week but it does include some important information.

I would like to begin by thanking everyone who made Friday such a success. As ever, there is always a lot of hard work behind the scenes and there are simply too many people to thank. It was lovely to see the community together and I hope that all of our families and children had a fantastic afternoon.

Reading Information

On Tuesday, immediately after school, I am planning a short session to provide information on how you can support your child with reading. The session will be full of simple but practical ideas and will only last twenty minutes. We will also be introducing some of the resources which the Friends of Johnston C.P. School have purchased.

Football

Well done to our girls' football team who travelled to Newtown on Friday to represent Pembrokeshire in the Welsh Finals. They played some excellent football and they were fantastic role models for our school. They should be very proud of the their achievement reaching this stage and I hope that they enjoyed the day.

As ever, if there is anything we can do to support your child and/or your family further, please do not hesitate to get in touch. My email address is: Williamsr1688@hwbcymru.net

Kind regards,

Mr. Williams.

Friday Afternoon Booking Form!

Annual Parental Survey - Win £30! - This is the last week to complete the form.

Each year we ask parents to answer a short questionnaire to provide us feedback.

I am planning a headteacher's coffee morning where we can discuss the feedback (all responses will be made anonymous) and generate next steps to improve on any areas of concern.

Please complete the survey for your chance to win £30!

E-safety Information - WhatsApp

As a school, we advise in the strongest possible terms that primary school aged pupils should not be using WhatsApp.

What is WhatsApp?

WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messaging apps, used by over 2 billion people in 180 countries. It allows you to send and receive messages, as well as make voice and video calls. You can connect with people individually or join group chats where lots of people can contribute. All you need to set up a WhatsApp account is a phone number.

What age rating is WhatsApp?

  • The app is rated 16+.
  • Features of WhatsApp

To connect you with others, WhatsApp checks your phone’s address book for other users and automatically suggests these as your WhatsApp contacts. It also updates your WhatsApp contact list whenever your phone contacts sign up to the app. This is an optional feature, and you can switch it off, but this puts limits on the app’s functionality.

Through the privacy settings in the app, you can help your child control who can see this information.

When you are using WhatsApp, certain information is shared with your contacts:

  • Status – this allows you to share updates on your profile in the form of text, photo, video, or GIF that disappears after 24 hours.
  • Last seen – this tells your contacts what time you last used the app.
  • Online – this tells your contacts if you are currently using the app.
  • Read receipts – this allows users to see if the message has been sent, delivered, and read.

What are the risks of Whats App?

  • Unwanted contact
  • Pressure to respond
  • Location sharing
  • Inappropriate content
  • Cyberbullying
  • Oversharing

Tips to help keep your child safe on Whats App:

  • Get to know privacy settings and help your child make use of safety features.
  • Talk about sharing and let your child know they can and should always talk to a trusted adult if they see anything online that worries them.
  • Set family rules about location sharing.
  • Consider making bedrooms a mobile free area and having a central place in the home to charge devices that have access to Whats App.
