This October Cameron Smith etched his name in the history books as he scored his 200th collegiate career goal against Niagara University as a member of Mason's Club Ice Hockey Team.

Cameron's journey towards this success has been a long one - filled with many of the ups & downs that athletes face as they navigate a budding career.

It wasn't long ago that he had his sights set on playing hockey professionally. In fact, Cameron was scouted by multiple D1 teams in his junior career.

Unfortunately, after facing a string of injuries in the late stages of his junior career, he ultimately made the decision to halt his pursuit of playing professionally or for a Division I institution.

This decision did not diminish Cameron's love for the game. He was able to continue his passion at Mason, where he was recruited to play for our Men's Ice hockey club team.

As a member of Mason's Ice Hockey Team, Cameron went on to become the team's all time leading goalscorer, scoring 180 goals and securing over 300 points for the team.

"I had quite a long junior career before coming to Mason and when I got the call that they wanted me to come there and I'd be able to play a lot, I was really excited by the opportunity." Cameron said.

"I've been able to study Computer Science at Mason and it has just been so fun. It's been very important to me to be able to continue competing while also studying for my career." Smith stated in an interview with the the Washington Capitals.

As an Arlington Native and a lifelong Caps fan, Cameron got his start in hockey with the Little Caps program.

Cam is delighted to have scored his 200th goal and is "honoured to be a part of this program and what it has come out to be." He emphasised that while looking back, the memories he made while playing for Mason will be of much more value than the goals he scored.

Apart from reaching the incredible milestones he has with the Mason Ice Hockey Team, Cameron was also a part the 2018 AHCA all star team that traveled to Russia.

Outside of ice hockey, Cameron is a pursuing an applied computer science degree with a concentration in software engineering and is also pursuing a few entrepreneurial interests.

This is an fantastic and inspirational achievement from one of our own, and we are all very excited to see the great things Cameron has in store for the future!

Congratulations on this incredible feat Cameron! The #MasonNation and all of us at Mason Recreation are proud of you!
