Starving in Cuba the good, but mostly bad & ugly Food

Food in Cuba was limited and terrible. That is not a commentary on Cuban cuisine or cooking - I love Cuban cuisine. The political and economic situation is just so bad that finding food - especially decent food - is a daily challenge for people like me traveling on a “Support for the Cuban People” permit where I have to eat at privately-owned restaurants as much as possible.

How did I survive that week?

Coffee, chocolate, and of course rum.

I LOVE CUBAN RUM.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but I got lucky my first meal in Cuba -

Normally, I wouldn’t touch a fish with a head and tail, but I was starving so I tried it. It was probably the best fried fish I’ve ever had.

First, the bad meals (which were most of them).

First dinner in Cuba… a sign of things to come.(Yes, it was as bad as it looks.)
Ceviche. I think I blocked out my memory of the taste.
This place in Varadero wasn’t terrible, but still a long way from “good”.
Nope.
I can’t even.
Yep, it was as bad as it looks. Maybe 2 bites. Paid my check and walked to the next restaurant.
So gross.
Hungry.

THE GOOD STUFF

Beautiful fresh fruit breakfast at my Casa Particulaire in Vedado
Cubans know their chocolate, if you can find it.
Simple but edible Omelette at La Mixologica
Finally, a fresh salad - La Mixologica, Vedado
Cubans do coffee right (when the power is on)
