Ms. Qiu’s Mandarin classes celebrate Chinese New Year

In order to celebrate Year of Rabbit, Ms.Qiu’s students in the fourth and fifth grades of Woodcrest Elementary School learned about the legend of Chinese New Year and explored the various preparations that Chinese people make to celebrate the New Year. They also made red envelopes, practiced using chopsticks to hold food, and made Chinese dumplings by themselves.
At Jefferson Middle School, the display windows are expressing the joy and happiness represented by the color red. In the Mandarin classes and culture club, students learned and developed their chopstick skills. Under Ms. Qiu's guidance, the students enjoyed making and sampling delicious Chinese dumplings very much.

Mr. Wang's Mandarin classes celebrate Chinese New Year

To experience celebrating Chinese New Year culture, students in Woodcrest Elementary School, taught by Mr. Jingcheng Wang, did some traditional activities including making paper cuts to decorate the classrooms and wrapping Chinese traditional dumplings to taste. A group of students from Dow High School, Christine Cai, Jessica Chai, Angelina Chen, and Ricky Wang, did presentations about Lunar New Year Celebration to the students as well. They talked about the origin, history, and activities of the Lunar New Year Celebration, introduced Chinese traditional instruments, and provided Chinese snacks for students to taste.

Dow High Marketing Classes recently finished their Make A Wish Project. During this project students create a small business to raise money for the Make A Wish Foundation. Students came up with a variety of creative businesses this year, selling a variety of items such as baked goods, coffee beans, lanyards, key chains, homemade candles, handmade bracelets and various other products. Several students created service businesses offering lawn care, snow removal and babysitting. There were three groups who hosted events featuring 3 on 3 basketball tournaments, a Starts & Turns Swim Clinic and a Dow vs. Midland Powderbuff Volleyball Game. Overall this project raised $8,087.25 for the Make A Wish Michigan Chapter. The top 3 selling students were Adam Dunlap who raised $1300 selling custom bracelets, partners Klaire Caldwell and Riley Schikorra who hosted the Powderbuff Volleyball game, also raising $1300, and Ty Murray, Savannah Doke & Kaylee Aultman who raised $575 with their 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament. Great job Chargers!

Midland High School Student Council donated food and supplies to Aaron's Gifts from Home in December. This organization was created in loving memory of HN Aaron Ullom who was a Midland High School Class of 2009 graduate. Aaron served in the United States Navy and was killed in action on July 12, 2011, in Afghanistan. The organization sends goodie boxes to all branches of the military to his brothers and sisters who have been deployed overseas. If you would like to contribute to this organization in memory of Aaron, you can find them in the Midland Mall. You can also drop off donations at Midland High School and we will bring them to the organization for you. Pictured in the photos are the MHS Student Council Aaron's mother, Debi Bartley-Ullom, Janelle Harris, and Emily Northrup (secretary and vice president of the MHS Student Council)

3rd-5th Graders at Plymouth Elementary had an opportunity to exchange art with Chinese children. Dee Howe, from MSU Extension here in Midland, brought in a variety of hands-on Chinese art and artifacts from her time abroad. Dee also shared student artwork from child artists in China. Students could practice writing in Chinese, brainstorm ways they can illustrate their Michigan, U.S.A. culture, and enter their illustration in a competition to be shared with Chinese children.
