Artist Statement
My work is my attempt to interpret the ideas that | have about myself
and the world I live in. Acrylic and oil pastels are my medium of choice but I do not limit myself to one medium, style, or concept.
My inspiration, knowledge and ideas change. Each piece I create is
simultaneously an extension of my past and what I've
learned.

Katina Douglas is a self-taught abstract painter whose raw and visceral depiction of human survival brings into the open the creation process as a struggle between the physical act of creating and the canvas. From an early age, Katina was drawn to all forms of art as an outlet to express herself but photography being her medium of choice. The pandemic, however, opened the door to a whole new creative world of painting.. Painting alongside teaching art, Katina has recently embraced a new artistic career. With Basquiat and his exploration of the human condition as a major influence on his practice, the raw texture in Katina’s paintings bears witness to the canvas becoming the physical expression of her own emotions.

Central to Katina’s practice is the intention to break free from social expectations and let go of the obsession with perfection. Layer after layer, she breaks down the barriers within herself and delves deeper into the subconscious to find freedom in its abstract expression. Hidden memories, love and fears are released to the surface in her search for healing. Through the physical layers of her works, conflicted feelings of sadness, pain and anxiety are being processed to make space for what comes next.
But underneath the apparent rawness lies a true appreciation of beauty in its unguarded, pure and unexpected form. Each painting reveals the aspiration of the painter to invoke introspection and healing. At the heart of Katina’s work is this relentless faith in humanity in which love, hope and self-acceptance play an essential role.
