DIVERSE BEAUTY

By: Marilyn West / April 03, 2022

As an effort to diversify the collections at NCMA, three local artists were commissioned to create pieces for the What is Beauty Today? exhibit based on the Alphonse Mucha: Art Nouveau Visionary exhibition that was on display from October 23, 2021–January 23, 2022.

This week on NCMATalks, a new podcast hosted by the NCMA, we will hear narratives from these three diverse artists, Alisha Locklear Monroe, Lakeshia T. Reid, and Tori “FNoRD” Carpenter. They will talk to us about the importance of cultural representation within the art community and discuss their recent work for the What is Beauty Today? exhibit which was featured in the NCMA exhibition galleries and select locations throughout Raleigh.

Join us on NCMATalks as Alisha Locklear Monroe, Lakeshia T. Reid, and Tori “FNoRD” Carpenter explain how the previous works of Alphonse Mucha inspired their modern art nouveau interpretations and explain their creative processes.

Alisha Locklear Monroe / Blessings

“The beauty in this is knowing who you are and not apologizing for it. So many times Native people are put in a box, and in Khinsley’s series, the girls are free and really seem to embrace their place in the world today.”

Alisha Locklear Monroe

Lakeshia T. Reid / Healing in a Weeping Place

“I didn’t come across Black women artists until I was in college—and that exposure really showed me it was possible. I hope that I’m able to touch someone in the same way.”

Lakeshia T. Reid

Tori “FNoRD” Carpenter / La Beauté de la Confiance (The Beauty of Confidence)

"I hope someone sees themselves in that pose, looking confident and gorgeous."
