Reception Class 1 & 2 Spring Term 1

Literacy

Lost and Found

Our first text was Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. We learned the story using a story map and used Tales Toolkit templates to identify the characters, settings, problem and solution from the story. We wrote character descriptions and then some non fiction fact files about penguins. Some children made their own books retelling the story.

chinese New year

Our next Literacy topic was Chinese New Year. We retold the story of the Chinese Zodiac using a story map and sequenced the animals in the story using our phonic knowledge to write their names. We also used Tales Toolkit to identify the characters and settings from the story. We then moved onto instruction writing after making our own Chinese lantern. We sequenced the steps before writing our own instructions.

maths

We began the half term by recapping the properties of numbers to ten and different number bonds using Numicon. Some children wrote their own number sentences.

We then moved onto geometry and after recapping the names and properties of 2D shapes we explored 3D shapes and their properties. We also made repeating patterns and symmetrical patterns using 2D shapes.

We then learned about ordinal numbers linked to the animals of the Chinese Zodiac and the order they came in the race. On the final week we will be revisiting double numbers.

geography

Our subject driver this half term has been Geography. We learned about where we live in Mapplewell and that it is in England. We then looked at Antarctica and the South Pole where penguins come from linked to our key text lost and found.

We then learned about China, linked to the Chinese New Year. We learned about the Great Wall of China and some facts about Chinese Culture and food. We practised using chopsticks.

We have learned about some of the features of maps and had a go at creating our own maps.

We have enjoyed looking at different maps, atlases and globes to identify the places we know or have visited.

science

In Science we have looked at seasonal changes and what happens to our environment over the passing of a year. We explored the properties of ice and observed rainbows and different weather patterns. We can name the seasons of the year and explain the usual weather patterns for each one.

PE

In PE our topic was gymnastics. We learned different balances, stretches, jumps and rolls and put them together in a sequence to perform for our class mates.

valentine's disco

coming next

Our next subject driver is Art. We will be looking at work from various chalk artists and creating our own. We will also be looking at the work of Jackson Pollock.

We will explore mixing primary colours to create secondary colours and different techniques of chalk art such as smudging and adding water.

Our story next half term is 'Chalk' by Bill Thomson, which is a picture book and will allow the children narrate their own stories around the illustrations and be inspired to create their own chalk drawing.

thank you to all our parents and carers for your continued support. Have a lovely half term holiday.
