Transitioning a privately owned business is inevitable, and owners should be transition-ready regardless of the time on their retirement clocks. Positioning a business to project sustained and improved future performance, with minimum risk, is simply a smart business practice. So how does a private business owner successfully prepare the business for transition?
Ohio's new data protection act
While legislation in other states has focused on punishing businesses that fail to protect customer data, the ODPA is the first state-level legislation that incentivizes businesses to bolster data security. Compliance is optional, however, businesses large and small would be well-served to consider its benefits.
The death of a business owner
Very few people second guess the notion of purchasing life insurance to protect their families. It’s one of many things prospective mothers and fathers do upon finding out they’re going to become parents. Yet, many small business owners, who oftentimes identify their partners and employees as “family,” frequently do not have life insurance to provide their businesses with the reassurance and continuity they’d desperately need in the event of their unanticipated death.

Heather Vanzant, Design Manager at Office Furniture Source, is our Rising Leader for May, being recognized for leading her company in the tenth best practice, Giving Back. “Heather has combined her giving nature with her innate leadership skills to push forward a meaningful community involvement for all team members at Office Furniture Source,” says Peter Ellington, President. Heather’s leadership has allowed Office Furniture Source to get involved with several outreach opportunities, which has allowed team members to identify and contribute to causes that are meaningful to them.
