Good and bad qualities of Ralph  By megan hocking

GOOD QUALITIES
LEADERSHIP - At the start of the novel Lord of the Flies Ralph was picked as the leader because he was the one who blew the conch which gathered them all together. This made him look powerful and respectful. One of the reasons that Ralph was picked over Jack was because Jack was arrogant, selfish and thought "[he'd] ought to be chief". Jack had been a leader back in civilisation but obviously wasn't a very kind or respected one because everyone voted for Ralph to become the leader. He looked like a leader.
"You could see now that he might make a boxer, as far as width and heaviness of shoulders went, but there was a mildness about his mouth and eyes that proclaimed no devil." Also, at the start of the novel you could see that he wanted to try to be the best leader he could be. He wanted to help the boys not control them and wanted to have peace and unity on the island.
LOYALTY - In the novel Ralph loyal to Piggy. Even though he made fun of Piggy in the beginning he respected and cared for him. Ralph knew he wasn't as smart as Piggy, so when they started to work together they formed a bond and a friendship. When Piggy was being bullied by Jack when jack stole his glasses Ralph stood up for Piggy. Piggy was a "true, wise friend" to Ralph which meant Piggy's death was devastating because Ralph had not only lost control, he lost one of his best friends, the person who he has stayed loyal to and who has stayed loyal to him. Piggy was one of the only ones who respected Ralph and the rules he had made.

BAD QUALITIES
GAVE INTO TEMPTATION - Even though Ralph was brave and confident he was only twelve years old and how many twelve year olds do you know that would resisted temptation? In this case Ralph gave in to the temptation of raw human nature and joined in with the killing of Simon.
He was scared of the beast as well as scared of what the other boys would of thought of him if he didn't do it. By this time civilisation was nearly completely gone and this would of been another factor. I think they forgot what was right and wrong so when they were killing Simon they didn't really completely understand what they were doing and the consequences of their actions.
NAIVE - In the novel I think Ralph was being naive because he thought that everything was going to be ok and they would be rescued within a few hours. He told Piggy about his dad and how he was in the navy and how his dad is going to rescue them soon. If it wasn't piggy who he said this to it would of given the rest of the boys false hope. I think Ralph is also naive because he thinks that all the boys are going to work together in harmony and they are going to follow his leadership.
You could tell that their were all different personalities on the island and obviously not everyone's going to get along. Especially while in a situation where they are by themselves, without adults, having to look after each other. As well as that you could really tell that Jack wanted to be leader and that he wasn't going to stop until he did. But the only reason he wanted to be the leader was so he could have power and control over other people.
