'The Languages Local To You' Photography Competition for Secondary School Students ages 11-16.

At the University of Exeter, we’re celebrating the UK's cultural diversity by inviting secondary students ages 11-16 to participate in an exciting photo competition. This year, the final exhibition will be touring Exeter, London, and Sheffield. And – yes – there are prizes up for grabs!

Take a photo showing languages other than English in your local area - shop signs, bilingual street signs, film posters, advertisements and so on. Let your imagination flow! Here are the guidelines:

  • Provide a brief caption, describing why and how the language is used in your chosen photograph (up to 100 words).
  • Submit your photo alongside your caption in Word or PDF format to your school.
  • Your school will then select up to three entries.

The winners, runners-up, and shortlisted photos, will tour in an exhibition this summer at the following locations: the University of Exeter, the Goethe Institut, and Newham (London), and Winter Gardens, Sheffield.

The top 30 entries will tour the UK exhibition. 4 winning entries will each receive a £100 Amazon voucher. 10 runners-up will each receive a £50 voucher. A further 16 shortlisted entries will also be exhibited.

Entries will be judged on these criteria:

  • The overall coherence of the captured photograph and caption
  • Picture quality
  • Creativity of photo choice
  • Quality and creativity of accompanying caption.

Submit your photo alongside your caption to your school. Your school will then select up to three entries and send them, either in Word or PDF format through the following form:
