Jingi Walla - Welcome!

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, the Arakwal people of the Bundjalung nation. We are grateful for the winding creek - Balun - and the Bangalow Palm trees, that are not just pretty but also a source of food, water and materials for the Arakwal people. We are thankful we can learn whilst we play on this land. We respect and love our Jugan - land. We treat all elders with jarima (pronounced Garima) - respect. We will take action to protect, unite and connect with Country.

Class SRC Representatives

Last Friday I had the privilege of inducting our new SRC representatives at assembly. Congratulations to the students who have been chosen by their peers to represent their grade this semester as Student Representative Council (SRC) members. And well done to all students who nominated themselves to run. These students will represent the general student voice at school, so please encourage your child to speak with their SRC rep and Mrs Gisen if they have something they would like to bring up or see happen at school.

Professional Learning Saturday Conference

Last Saturday, my staff participated in a professional development day. We spent the morning learning about teaching writing, and how this is covered in the new syllabus. Laetitia Cross ran a wonderful introduction to the work that we will be focused on this year in our professional learning and teaching programs.

We also spent time looking at the Department’s new welfare and wellbeing policies, procedures and framework, which aim to keep students engaged in learning at school. This session was run by Katie-Eve Gisen, and all staff found the session engaging and useful.

Our professional learning for the day aligned with our Strategic Improvement Plan, particularly Strategic Directions 1 and 3. We are looking forward to putting our learning into practice. A very big thank you to Katie-Eve and Laetitia for all of your work on these presentations, and also to my staff for spending their Saturday engaged in professional development to ensure that we continue on our journey of school improvement.

Assembly

Regular K-6 assemblies will be held fortnightly on a Friday afternoon at 2:30pm. Parents and caregivers will receive an invitation if their child is receiving a Positive Behaviour for Learning Bronze, Silver or Gold award, and also if their child’s class is presenting an item.

Please note the expectation is for students to go back to class after assembly is complete, to finalise any end of week class matters, including handing out of notes. It is also a nice way to end the day with their friends and teachers. Students should not be signed out after assembly, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews

Three Way Interviews will be held during Week 10 of this term. Booking information will be sent home in the coming weeks.

Communication

For any contact with your child or child’s teacher, please call or email the school office and they will pass on the required information. Your child’s teacher will call or organise a time to meet with you. Please be mindful that teachers are in class teaching or on playground duty during school hours so they will be in touch with you when they are able to.

Research shows that students learn best when parents and the school work together in a mutually respectful, supportive and positive way. The NSW DoE has a School Community Charter for all members of NSW public school communities. We greatly appreciate all parental involvement and welcome you to our school community.

Toilets

The student toilets have been an ongoing problem since the start of this year, with many instances of deliberate damage and sullying occurring throughout the day. This makes it very unpleasant for other students to use, and is an ongoing cost having to organise emergency cleans, or replace broken fixtures and repair damage. These funds then have to be redirected from elsewhere in the budget. I have asked my staff to remind students about treating school property with respect and following our PB4L expectations, but I ask you to please also speak to your children about this important matter. This will be vital as we continue to take ownership of our new school buildings and spaces, as we want these spaces to remain wonderful and inspiring for many school generations to come.

Meet the teacher sessions

Finally, it was wonderful to see so many parents and students who came along to our Meet the Teacher sessions. It was a such a lovely afternoon, and it was a great opportunity to mingle and get to know one another. Thank you to our Year 6 students and parent volunteers for cooking our sausages and selling lots of sausage sandwiches and drinks. I would also like to give my appreciation to my staff who stayed back to supervise and assist on the evening.

We will be selling our remaining sausages and drinks to help continue our fundraising efforts for the Year 6 farewell and legacy wall in the coming weeks.

Carol

class of the week - jahrayn 3/4w

It has been a busy start to 2023 and we’re already in Week 6! Students have been settling into a new school year, new year level and for some a new stage. We have been busy completing initial assessments, setting up classroom rules and expectations and establishing what lessons across all key learning areas look like in 3/4 W.

Rock and Water

3/4W have been participating well in the Rock and Water program. They have practised standing stronger by grounding, centering and regulating their breath. They have practised maintaining eye contact using both ‘water eyes’ and ‘rock eyes’ and also set boundaries. In the most recent session, they explored the rock and water concept at a deeper level through partner activities such as ‘sticky hands’ where they could feel and sense the right time to use more or less force to achieve an outcome.

Writing

Students have been learning about the process authors go through when writing texts. As authors in 3/4 W, we have been investigating the stages of planning, composing and recording, where the ‘7 Steps to Writing Success’ fits into the process and determining our author’s purpose. Together we have completed each stage and written learning intentions and success criteria so we know what we are trying to achieve. We are progressing toward revising and editing and publishing in the coming weeks.

This week we used the image of a tornado as inspiration. We worked with a partner to plan, compose and begin writing a narrative. We focused on sizzling starts, dynamic dialogue and tightening the tension within our writing. To practise using Google Classroom and Docs, we used the laptops to type the start of our stories. We hope you are captivated by the beginning of our stories.

The storm and the horses ~ by Naomi C

Tick-tock, tick-tock. Luna watched the clock. “When will something exciting happen?” Luna asked herself. BANG! Lightning struck Luna and her family’s house! I wonder if dad’s all right” Luna thought. Her mum could tell she was worried.

THE WILDEST WINDSTORM OF THE WEST ~ by Miranda B

Flow heard the tingling of her keyring as she walked back from school. It was a dull and boring day, and quite hot too. It had been awfully cold this winter, so she enjoyed this unusually hot day. As a few minutes passed, the walk felt as if it were going forever. Once she reached the house, she was tired of walking, so she slumped onto her bed, reading.

Tornado Torture! ~ by Ruby S-H

Crash! Went the thunder, as the storm is getting closer. Lottie screams “Aaaggghhh!” Sarah rushes in, looks at her phone then quickly picks up Lottie and runs outside. Farmer Frank is already out there rounding up the sheep, horses and cattle. “We need to evacuate!” He said. Lottie doesn't know what’s going on. “Frank, we’ll ride the horses out of here!” Sarah said loudly. Lottie jumps on Luna, Sarah jumps on Silver and Frank jumps on Graham. Luckily this isn’t the worst of it. But they need to hurry up. They see lights in the distance, “We’ll ride over there” Frank said. Sadly they were too late, they saw a tornado, they headed back inside, got their essential stuff, loaded up the horses then galloped away. They look back at their beautiful ranch, which is now nothing but rubble. Lottie starts to cry.

src - semester one

At Bangalow Public School, we value student voice. Our SRC gives students the skills to create and to implement, to lead and to follow, to learn from mistakes and to succeed. Most importantly, it gives students the opportunity to represent the views of their peers, and to succeed in making those views heard. If a student isn't in the SRC but would like to suggest ideas, they are most welcome to approach their peers or Mrs Gisen and pitch these.

Congratulations to our Semester 1 Student Representative Council (SRC) who each received their badge at last week's assembly. We know you will be wonderful student leaders.

kiss 'n' ride procedures

A reminder to parents about the Kiss n Ride procedures. Please familiarise yourself with our Kiss n Ride procedures which have been emailed to all parents.

Importantly, please take note of the following:

  • Cars ARE NOT TO drive up to the area in front of the school, near the school gate behind the hall at any time. Children and adults use this area as pedestrians. Cars are to remain on the road at all times.
  • During Kiss n Ride operating times (8:50am - 9:20am and 3:00pm - 3:30pm) the road is one way. Please follow the direction as laid out by the red arrows on the diagram in the procedures during these times.
  • Do not pull out ahead of vehicles that are in front of yours once your child has hopped out of the car. And do not cut across the area to the west of the small Showground oval. This is also an area of high pedestrian traffic.
  • Please remind children to get out of the car on the left-hand side, and ensure that your child is organised and ready to depart the car quickly when you pull up at drop off, so that you don't keep other cars waiting.
  • Please be mindful of the speed you are travelling at and go slow.

We thank you for your understanding as we work together to ensure the safety of all of our students, and also the greater community.
