FACILITY PLANNING & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Our Administration, School Board, Staff, and Facilities Committee have been working on options to prioritize and address our facility needs. This includes developing options, evaluating budgets, and engaging with our community.

FACILITY IMPROVEMENT PRIORITIES IDENTIFIED

Our facility needs were outlined by building, then prioritized as part of a long-term facility plan. Below are the needs that were identified as priority improvements to extend the life of our buildings.

BIRD ISLAND - $6 million for improvements and repairs to better support performance arts and athletics:

  • Add parking (in place of 1917 and 1956 sections of building)
  • Revitalize performing arts area including new curtains, stage lighting and flooring, sound system, storage, and moveable bleachers
  • Update space to support athletic use with new varsity locker rooms and remodeled public restrooms
  • Replace 25–70-year-old HVAC building controls, electrical, plumbing, and ventilation systems to increase efficiency and reduce operating costs
  • Update from fluorescent to LED lighting for energy and cost savings

OLIVIA - $33.9 million for renewed, updated and additional spaces to address aging infrastructure and changing educational standards:

  • Repair or replace worn interiors (ex; floors, ceilings, doors, casework) and exteriors
  • Demolish 1922 section of building to create new commons/cafeteria (large enough to support student population) kitchen, receiving, storage and FACS spaces
  • Create new entrance and consolidate office for enhanced security and efficiency
  • Provide appropriately sized special education classrooms and create breakout spaces for flexible, small group learning
  • Remodel Technical Education, Science, Art, and Technology to create learning spaces that support class work and add collaboration space for project-based activities.
  • Update physical education/athletic spaces to include new gymnasium seating, renovated locker rooms and a new multipurpose/wrestling room and fitness center
  • Replace 25–70-year-old HVAC building controls, electrical, plumbing, and ventilation systems to increase efficiency and reduce operating costs
  • Update from fluorescent to LED lighting for energy and cost savings
  • Provide separate restrooms for elementary, middle, and high school students – and add outdoor access to high school restrooms during athletic events to eliminate the need for portable toilets

PLANNING PROCESS

Strategic Planning

Engaged our community to develop BOLD's five-year strategic plan in which our facilities are a high priority.

Facility Audit & Planning

Partnered with an independent facility consultant to complete a comprehensive audit of the deferred maintenance and facility needs in our District.

Conducted planning meetings with Facilities Committee and Board of Education, as well as ideation and feedback sessions with District Staff.

Developed options for prioritizing and addressing deferred maintenance and facility deficiencies.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Work continues on a comprehensive facility plan for BOLD Public Schools. The next step is determining what our families - and the communities we serve - will support in order to address the priority needs of our school district.

To ensure our community has an opportunity to join the discussion, we are utilizing three engagement tools:

1. Community Facility Task Force

This task force was comprised of volunteers who wished to be part of the process. Meetings began in February to review priorities, needs, and options. Tours were conducted at both buildings to help the task force understand the priority needs.

2. Community Survey

A phone survey was conducted in late January of 2023 to collect feedback on priorities, needs, and options. Click the button below for a detailed explanation of the results.

3. Community Tours

Building tours were offered in early 2023 to provide community members the chance to see the needs and hear potential options in person.
