Redwoods and Rocky Coastlines Trip Report - Tom Bol Photo Workshops - July 2023

We photograph the tallest trees in the world on our Redwoods and Rocky Coastlines Workshop . In July, the temperatures are cool and it is the driest time of the year. Fog rolls in daily and acts like a natural diffuser for the trees, flowers, and berries along Highway 101, also called the Redwood Highway.

Big Leaf Maple Trees are also very photogenic in this area. Mossy twisted limbs create a contrast to the straight airy ferns below.

We were lucky to have late-blooming rhododendrons this year on our favorite trails. We photographed the light pink blossoms in the coastal fog during two of our photo sessions.

Tom calls this a "Discovery Workshop". Instead of stopping at overlooks, we encourage participants to try a variety of techniques and discover interesting subject matter as we walk up to a mile on forest trails.

The Redwood Highway passes by several scenic coastal areas like Lagoon Creek and the Battery Point Lighthouse. We used ND filters and slow shutter speeds to capture lines and texture in the surf and seastacks.

This is a great workshop for macro lovers. This year we had several colorful subjects including Columbia Tiger Leaves, Salmonberries, Salal flowers and some beautiful white iris.

After spending several days in the Redwoods, we switch gears and head north on Highway 101 to the Oregon Coast. This year we stopped at Kissing Rock Byway to photograph seascapes with sweet peas in the foreground.

Bandon, Oregon is the final destination for our workshop. We spend our time there on the beach, photographing the jagged sea stacks using different techniques and lenses. The locations for this workshop are spectacular, the summer weather is cool and the crowds are minimal. We will be coming back for years to come!

Thanks to all of our Redwoods Photographers!
