RHINEBECK HAPPENINGS!

The goal is to highlight teaching and learning by capturing and celebrating our students, teachers, staff, and leaders in Rhinebeck. Enrichment opportunities, community events, and other "unique" moments will also be shared. Enjoy!

The Addams Family, RHs Musical

Rhinebeck is finally back on the stage with a musical! Last weekend, Rhinebeck High School’s production of The Addams Family hit the stage after a long hiatus due to COVID-19. The musical follows the creepy and kooky Addams family. However, there is a slight twist. Wednesday Addams has grown up and fallen in love with Lucas Beineke, a sweet boy from a respectable family. After the “normal” Beineke family is invited over for dinner, there can only be one outcome – absolute chaos! All three performances of The Addams Family were a success. Actors, crew, and pit orchestra wowed crowds during each performance. Special thanks to Rhinebeck families and the community for helping us back on the stage – we couldn’t have done so without your support!

Congrats to our Musicians

Students of the Rhinebeck music department performed for the Board of Education on March 8th in recognition of Music in our Schools Month. Two BMS seventh-graders performed “Duo No. 4” by Gariboldi, a three-movement duet that is technically challenging and beautiful to hear. Students of the RHS percussion ensemble performed “Brooms Hilda” by Chris Crockarell, a contemporary percussion piece that uses brooms as musical instruments, and was inspired by the music of “Stomp!” The percussion ensemble plans to memorize and add choreography to this piece before performing it during the spring concert.

Listening and Learning for ALL

A community working together to improve and enhance the learning lives of all children is at the heart of a high-quality school system. This series of interactive discussions expand our lens of perception, enriches our perspective, and creates new opportunities for our students. These discussions and data will help to shape our thinking as we creatively and strategically plan for the future of Rhinebeck schools.

Kindergarten at CLS

Students in Ms. Lane's kindergarten class are engaged in a Fundations lesson where it was time to practice forming letters and writing CVC and CVCE words, while also trying out sentence writing using beginning capitalization and ending punctuation. Students in Ms. Giamportone's room are engaged in Reading workshop, which includes guided reading and independent reading. Books, books, books, and more books! What joyful experiences seeing and hearing how proud the students were with their encoding and decoding skills and interests in their reading.

6th Grade Social Studies At BMS

Today’s Silk Road lesson was the last one in our two-week Ancient China unit. For the past few days, we have been discussing how China’s challenging geography impacted the development of their civilization, their golden age & the rise and fall of the Qin & Han Dynasties. Those lessons culminated today with an intense game of Silk Road hangman!

Community Lunch PiloT at RHS

These high school students are thrilled to be participating in our Community Lunch pilot. Dr. Davenport and Mr. Burg worked with teachers to engage students in fun and meaningful ways, which included navigating social interactions through game playing and activities that involved teamwork and connectedness. Students provided feedback such as… "Everything." "The environment being in another part of the school while eating felt fresh and new." "The list of options for students to choose where to go and what to do was so exciting!" "It was great being able to see my friends. The badminton tournament was also really fun!"

The Glowforge, Our New Machine

The New York Times describes the Glowforge as "...the next wave of computer-aided creativity." Mr. Randall demonstrates the power of this new technology to Superintendent Cousins, and Mr. Jensen, Director of Technology. Engraving, scoring, and cutting using a wide variety of materials (wood, leather, stone & more) are future opportunities for our students to engage in with Mr. Randall. Design thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration are just some of the skills students will gain with this new machine.

6th Grade math AT BMS

Students have been working on finding the area of parallelograms, triangles, trapezoids, composite figures, and regular polygons. They also looked at how changing the dimensions of your shape affects your area.

Sculpture At RHS

The vast potential for 3D artworks makes Sculpture an exciting class to take as well as to teach. In Sculpture, we try out all types of mediums and a wide variety of methods of 3D construction are explored. One student is creating a glass mosaic! Another student decided to create a realistic plaster hand casting, while another student shows her freshly trimmed clay bowl, thrown on the wheel.

Jump rope For Heart at CLS

CLS Physical Education has partnered with the American Heart Association for over 20 years by combining our jumping skills unit with the annual Kids Heart Challenge. KHC provides the perfect vehicle for combining physical activity with the development of heart-healthy habits. It promotes fitness, cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility as the students rise to the challenge of learning and mastering new jump rope skills. During the unit, we offer the annual CLS PE poster contest. In this interdisciplinary activity, students in grades 3-5 use their artistic abilities to create a poster that visually imparts a healthy heart message. The posters are proudly displayed in the gymnasium for the whole school community to view. This year, we broke a record with 53 poster submissions for the contest.
