KEVI Newsletter 19th May 2023

Senior Leadership Team Update

We have had lots of visitors to KEVI this week and it always makes us so proud to hear lovely comments about how impressed they are with our students. How we greet visitors is becoming a really important feature of our school. Students confidently look visitors in the eye and say “Good Morning” or “Good Afternoon”. This is so important because we know that one day that very same greeting will set a great first impression during an interview for a university place, an apprenticeship or a dream job.

Thank you for your continued support of the self-quizzing homework that we have introduced at KEVI. This week we have revisited the expectations of the homework in both KS3 and KS4 tutor periods and have explained to pupils the importance of the self-checking and correction part of the work as this enables pupils to know what they have learnt and what needs more work. It also helps with the memorisation process as they are having to actively re-read the information. We have shown pupils examples of the standard of work we expect them to produce which includes:

  • The subject being studied and the date on the top line, both of which are underlined.
  • Five boxes drawn across the page
  • Each box filled with black and purple pen

Further guidance, including a video on the process, can be found on the homework section of the website. On this page you will find the current knowledge organisers and the schedule for the term.

If pupils fail to complete their homework they will receive a lunchtime 15-minute detention, and if they fail to complete it three times in a week this will result in a 40 minute detention after school on a Thursday. At KS4 this does include the additional homework set by subject teachers.

It is important that your child complete the homework each night as we know that regular retrieval practice has huge benefits for their future success. Regular retrieval practice:

  • Strengthens memory so forgetting is less likely to occur in the long-term. Retrieval practice has been identified as being the most effective strategy for long-term memory in many studies and papers.
  • Identifies gaps in students’ learning as it forces them to examine their learning.
  • Improves understanding of material.
  • Improves transfer of knowledge to new concepts.
  • Reduces test anxiety because students feel more confident in their knowledge, and it reduces the need for ‘cramming’.

If you have any concerns or questions please email Mrs Milligan: kmilligan@kingedwardacademy.co.uk.

Have a lovely weekend

Courage

This week our Year 11 and Year 13 students have taken part in the first full week of national examinations. We liked to say a huge well done to them all for their attitude and approach.

It has been a week where they have needed their KEVI courage in full because exam season can be a rollercoaster of emotions. Regardless of how one feels after an exam it is worth remembering the message in this timeless quotation. Experiencing success or failure provides a test of character and both require courage to continue.

Why we do what we do -Academy Rationale

KEVI 6

It is really important that our students come to school prepared for the day, that includes wearing their uniform correctly and bringing all the relevant equipment.

We poverty proof our expectations in relation to stationery by insisting that all students bring the KEVI 6 which comprises two black pens, a purple pen, a pencil, a rubber and a ruler. The KEVI 6 can be purchased at school for 40p but also many supermarkets and stationers stock these items at very reasonable prices.

We ask for black pens because that is what students have to use in GCSE exams and two in case one runs out. The purple pen is used for corrections, so it is easy for students to see in them in their books. The pencil and rubber are for use with diagrams and tables, as is the ruler as well as underlining dates and titles.

Please make sure your son/daughter is equipped with the KEVI 6. Tutors and teachers do check this and students will receive a lunchtime detention if they are not properly equipped. Being organised is one of the key executive functioning skills* and a key life skill.

*Executive functioning skills facilitate the behaviours required to plan and achieve goals. The fundamental skills related to executive function include proficiency in adaptable thinking, planning, self-monitoring, self-control, working memory, time management and organisation.

This week students learnt how to complete sudoku in their Maths lessons. Students were then given one to complete for Friday to enter the competition. The house with the most correct entries wins! We are excited to find out the results Monday!

Rounders

House Rounders took place this week. The results will be announced in assembly on Monday. All the staff were very impressed with students’ knowledge of skills, tactics and rules within the game. A massive thank you to Mrs Mitchell, Mr Read, Mr Irving, Mr Carrington and Ms Hunter who umpired the games. Without you the competition could not go ahead.

Thinking Ahead – My Future, My Choice

Attention Year 8 & Year 9!

  • What are your future plans & career possibilities?
  • What plans to do you have after you have completed your GCSEs?
  • Do you plan to go on to further/higher education? If so what courses might you study?
  • What career ideas do you have for the future at the moment?

In year 7, 8 and 9 you will be learning new skills and knowledge that will give you the confidence to help you plan your next steps. This process starts with your careers education in school which will encourage you to think about your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes. You will also start to make some important decisions that could influence your future career path as you will be choosing your subjects to study for GCSE. This process will begin for all Year 9 students early next year.

Each week we will show you examples of the various careers linked to the subject you are studying. This week’s career idea is ........

Attendance

Attendance last week was 90.4% which is really disappointing in comparison to the week before. Please continue to work with us to improve attendance.

Congratulations to Year 7 and 8 with impressive attendance last week!

House Attendance

It was a close week for house attendance with Mercury just taking the lead with 92% closely followed by Apollo and Arete at 91% and Minerva at 89%.

Well done to the House Champions for making attendance ‘everyone’s business’.

If you would like to discuss your child’s attendance or need any support with attendance, then please contact Mrs Kwee or Mrs Ziller on 01790 753 260 or tkwee@kingedwardacademy.co.uk to discuss ways to support your child's attendance.

Table Talk

On Monday’s assembly we will be discussing the dangers of vaping with students. Vaping has seen a growth worldwide especially among teenagers, and we are no different in our community at KEVI. Among our youth, e-cigarettes, especially the disposable kind, are more popular than any traditional tobacco product. According to the 2021 National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million U.S. middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes in 2021, with more than 8 in 10 of those youth using flavoured e-cigarettes.

There are three reasons e-cigarettes may be particularly enticing to young people. First, many teens believe vaping is less harmful than smoking. Second, e-cigarettes have a lower per-use cost than traditional cigarettes. Finally, youths and adults find the lack of smoke appealing. With no smell, e-cigarettes reduce some of the stigma of smoking.

“What I find most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would’ve never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit,” says Michael J Blaha a world expert on vaping. “It’s one thing if you convert from cigarette smoking to vaping. It’s quite another thing to start up nicotine use with vaping. And, getting hooked on nicotine often leads to using traditional tobacco products down the road.”

A research report says disposable e-cigarette use has increased 1,000% among high school students and 400% among middle school students since 2019.

Please discuss with your children the use of vaping and the dangers attached to them. There is a great parents guide available from the link below

Teen Support

Many of our students in year 11 and 6th form are mid way through exams. This can be a very stressful time for all of us.

Below is a link to young minds with help and advice on dealing with exam stress and tips on ensuring you are mentally focussed and prepared.

Exam Stress | How To Deal with Exam Stress | YoungMinds

Word of the Week :Complicit

Complicit: adjective – being involved with others in an activity that is unlawful or morally wrong. Origin Latin: com – with/together; plectere – to weave.

My brother opened all of his birthday presents while the house was empty and because I helped him, I was complicit. Even though she didn’t actually steal from the office, by not informing the manager, she was complicit in the theft.

The newspaper editor was complicit in reporting lies by not correcting the journalist’s report.

Linked words: accomplice: noun – a person who helps another to commit a crime.

It was his accomplice who kept watch while he broke into the house.

Linked words: complicated: adjective – made up of many connected parts.

The pattern was complicated because it included many different sections which had to fit together.

Are you interested in gardening? Any students who are interested in joining a gardening club should attend a meeting Monday 22nd May 2023 at 1:15pm in Maths 4. Please see Mrs Johnson for more information.

Maths

The KEVI 1,000,000

Students are challenged to reach 1,000,000 questions answered correctly on Sparx Maths by the end of the academic year, our total currently stands at a phenomenal 715,161. Students who contribute to this success will be recognised each week in assembly and receive a reward. Students have improved last weeks total by +20,706. Students have been working so hard and we are delighted with how they have embraced the challenged.

Sudoku Challenge

Students in maths this week have been working on the Sudoku challenge. Students have been working on learning how to play Sudoku and practicing their skills with the House Sudoku competition. Students demonstrated incredible resilience as some of the challenges were particularly tough.

Could you complete the Sudoku Challenge?

Year 11

It was really wonderful to see so many smiles walking out of the first GCSE Maths exam. Students have reported that the topics below have not yet been examined so we would recommend focusing on these areas for revision before Paper 2 and Paper 3 as they are usually favoured on a calculator paper.

  • Trigonometry
  • Circles – area and circumference
  • Pythagoras’ Theorem
  • Iterative Methods (Higher Tier only)

Years 7 and 8 will be reciting their times tables to help embed them in their long term memory.

At the end of each lesson, they will stand behind their chairs in silence, preparing for themselves for the next lesson and just before they leave the whole class will chant the timetables assigned for that week.

Week commencing 22/05/2023 - we will be chanting our 7 times table.

Accelerated Reader

KEVI20 WC 20th May Lesson 1

This week we have new Word Half-Millionaires! Well done to:

  • Kaiden (Y8) : 522,536 words!
  • Chole (Y8) : 544, 014 words!

It’s particularly impressive that all of Kaiden’s words were read in just four books which shows great tenacity with complex books. Chloe has been whizzing through The Murder Most Unladylike detective series by Robin Stevens. Since Chloe has read at least ten of this series one after another, other Y7-Y9 detection-loving readers would probably enjoy them too!

Several more students very close to being Word Half Millionaires, but so many more students simply need to quiz on the books they have just completed to add hundreds of thousands of words onto their running total.

Library Opening Times

Library opening times continue to be affected by external examinations as the Library is used on a daily basis as an examination room. Days and times the Library is open are published for students outside the library and also shared via tutors and assemblies. Should students choose to read books from home, please Google “A R Bookfinder” where you will be able to check the level (BL) of more than 180,000 books.

Sports Enrichment

This week KEVI hosted a Year 9 Rounders match against Skegness Grammar School. A very enjoyable evening was had by all, the sun shone, and the KEVI team showed amazing sportsmanship and determination, which gave them an impressive victory over the opposition. Well done to the Year 9 mixed team who were competitive, whilst remaining respectful.

Clubs continue to run at lunch times and after school for Summer Cup Athletics, Tennis, Cricket, Table Tennis, Rounders and Boccia. (Timetable attached) Students should attend clubs to enable them to be considered for team selections for upcoming fixtures and events, including the 10th anniversary Summer Cup 6th July 2023.

Upcoming fixtures Thursday 18th May Year 8 Rounders verses Skegness Grammar School. Tuesday 23rd May Year 7 Rounders verses Skegness Grammar School.

If your child has any special sporting interests or achievements outside of school, please make us aware so we can help to support their future development. Feel free to email me on lburton@kingedwardacademy.co.uk.
