Meaning of Genocide- The deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation.
The Armenian Genocide was the extermination of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire and the surrounding regions during 1915-1923. These killings were masterminded by the Young Turks and Kemalist government. Out of a total of 2 million Armenians, 1.5 million were tortured, massacred, and starved. Some were even sent to the desert to die of thirst and hunger. April 24 is commemorated as the date of the start of the Armenian Genocide. This genocide started when 300 Armenian leaders, writers, thinkers, and professionals were collected and deported from Constantinople.
6 Stages of Genocide
Classification- The distinguishing or populations; the classification of people by ethnicity, race, religion, or nationality.
Dehumanization- The denial of the humanity of the victims from the perpetrators, determined as subhuman and inferior. Mistreatment becomes humane in their eyes.
Organization- The state organization responsible for massacres and other atrocities, special militias or army units are often utilized, and turned into killing units.
Polarization- Widen the division of opposing groups, propaganda and social laws restrict the victims, makes it to where the citizens think that what is happening is just.
Preparation- Victims are identified and segregated, property is confiscated, deportation begins, and massacring becomes evident.
Extermination- The mass killing of the victims considered to be subhuman and inferior by shootings, exile to Syrian deserts, gas and suffocation massacres.
The Holocaust
There were about 9.5 million Jews in the world's population in 1933. in 1950 the population dropped to 3.5 million with 2 million of the population living in Russia.
There were 1.1 million Jewish children, 3-9 thousand homosexuals, about 200,000 mentally ill or physically disabled, and 220-500 thousand Gypsies.
There were 40,000 death facilities in German lands, 6 were extermination camps, and about 1,100 cities, towns, and villages that Germans forced the Jewish people to live in.
There were about 10,000 criminals imprisoned after the war, the Nazi criminals executed during 1945-1985 were 5,000
Sudan Genocide
The "Darfur Genocide" is the first genocide in the 21st century; it began in 2003 and is still having conflict today. The Darfur people are being pushed out of their homes by a government funded army known as the Janjaweed (devils on horseback).
Today over 480,000 people have been killed and about 2.8 million have been displaced. This conflict is taking place in Sudan the largest country in Africa. There has been on and off civil wars since 1956. North and South Sudan have been fighting over scarce resources that both need severally
