Volleyball Tops WPI, Gordon, Takes Tufts to Final Set

Hannah Wyllie

Heading to Medford Friday night, Colby hadn't defeated Tufts University since their storied 2005 season. The Mules jumped out early, taking the first two sets against the Jumbos. Colby battled right to the end but were unable to put the hosts away, falling in five sets.

Colby rebounded quickly on Saturday, taking matches against WPI and Gordon in straight sets, and building momentum as their conference schedule draws into its final weeks.

Emma Davis (photo right) led the Mules with a career-high 17 kills against Tufts, and followed it up with 12 and 14 respectively on Saturday. She now has eight double-digit kill performances on the season, and is currently ranked 6th in the NESCAC in kills/set. Fellow first-year LJ Grant is ranked 4th in the same category, and Sydney Sick (also a first-year) ranks 5th in the conference in assists.

Colby is now 10-4, ranked 6th in NESCAC.

Men's Soccer 1-1-1 on the Week

Colby snapped its six-game tie streak on Tuesday with a 2-0 win at the University of New England. Aidan O'Brien scored his first on the season giving Colby the lead in the 31st minute, assisted by Mario Simoes and Chase Dolinko. The Mules struck again just a minute into the second half when Justin Lauer put one in the back of the net on a pass from Eduardo Casanova. Colby's defense was sturdy only allowing two shots on net, both saved by Matt Morin.

Over the weekend, Colby gained another tie in Sunday's matchup in Clinton, N.Y. against NESCAC's top-ranked team, the Hamilton Continentals. O'Brien notched his second goal of the week as the Mules led most of the match. The hosts were able to strike late in the 81st minute to force the draw and maintain their footing atop the conference.

In the other weekend match, Colby fell to Middlebury College 3-1. Brendan McCarthy posted five first-half saves to lead the Mules to a 0-0 draw at the end of the first half. The Panthers were able to score three quick goals to start the second half. Colby's lone goal came off the foot of Mario Simoes, his fourth of the season.

Aidan O'Brien (26)

Colby is now 3-2-7, ranked 9th in NESCAC.

Women's Soccer Blanks MMA, Stays Close with Middlebury, Hamilton

The Mules continued their undefeated season in non-conference matchups with a 4-0 win over MMA on Tuesday. Jane Maguire slotted the only goal of the first half on an assist from Kerrie Verbeek giving the Mules a 1-0 lead. Colby added three second-half goals scored by Kaleigh Quinn, Kylie Thorp, and Murphy Leung. The Mules defense was simply impenetrable as the Mariners did not register a single shot.

In the first game of the weekend, Colby lost to Middlebury College 2-1 in a hard fought battle. Sophie DiGrande tied the score (fourth on the season) on an assist from Pepper Joseph to start the second half, igniting the Colby sideline. The match remained even until the Panthers netted the game-winner with five minutes remaining.

During the second match of the weekend, Colby fell to Hamilton College 3-1. The Continental's scored all three of their goals in the first half, and the Mules struggled to keep pace. Colby was able to avoid the shutout when Maguire scored her third of the season, assisted by Sophie Webb.

Colby is now 4-7, ranked 11th in NESCAC.

Football Battles Cardinals, Fall in Middletown

Brendan Sawyer

With both teams entering Saturday's contest with an identical 2-1 record (Wesleyan was ranked 10th in New England, Colby 11th), the importance of this matchup could not be understated.

Wesleyan tipped the scoreboard first with a field goal on their opening drive, but the Mules responded moments later, taking their ensuing possession 77 yards in 3:31. Running back Keon Smart found the end zone on a 2-yard rush, set up by a 49-yard screen pass from quarterback Matt Hersch to running back Brendan Sawyer. The two opponents traded punts to close out the first quarter, but the second frame belonged to the Cardinals. Wesleyan found the end zone on four consecutive possessions to close out the half with a 31-7 lead.

Colby's second half defensive adjustments kept pace with their performance in previous games. The Mules have held two of their previous three opponents to zero second-half points, and Colby stayed true to form Saturday. The defense forced Wesleyan into a turnover on downs on the first possession of the second half, and produced a turnover on the next Cardinal drive (Javon Williams, second INT of the season). The Mules held the hosts to just 41 total yards the remainder of the way, forcing four consecutive punts, but the first half deficit was too much to overcome. The Cardinals finished on top 31-14.

Andrew Iferenta (97)

Colby is now 2-2, ranked 5th in NESCAC.

Field Hockey Tops Thomas, Fall on Road to Panthers, Continentals

The Mules remained perfect in non-conference play, topping cross-town rival Thomas College 4-2 on Tuesday. Just a minute into the game Pernilla Shaw scored on a midfield pass from Mallory Moratori. After Thomas answered back quickly, Jackie Hill put the Mules back in the lead, scoring her sixth of the season on a rebound in front of the net. Casey Winslow and Molly Mitchell added second-half goals to secure the win for Colby.

Over the weekend, Colby played two tough NESCAC opponents falling to Hamilton College 3-1 and #1-ranked Middlebury 10-1. In the first match, the Continental's scored all three goals in the first quarter and Winslow knotted the lone goal for the Mules in the second frame. Against Middlebury, the powerful Panthers got out to an early lead and didn't look back. Shaw ruined the shutout opportunity in the third quarter with her fourth goal on the season. Emily Loeb recorded 13 saves setting a new personal season high.
