Welcome to Creative Minds!

Creative Minds is a seasonal magazine published and put together by the executives at Artspression. The purpose of this magazine is to showcase writing, photography, artwork, music, film etc. by youth in our communities. Please check out our past editions (links below) to get a glimpse of why we created Artspression and what Creative Minds is all about. Our theme for this edition is home. Home means something different to each and every one of us. It may be the city we live in, a secret hideaway only we know about, or a person, such as a close friend or family member. We wanted artists to be creative and personal with their response and interpretation.

As you view the following pieces, take a moment to reflect on what home means to you.

The landscape is both a feeling and a reminder. It's the feeling of a big city. It's being simultaneously a part of the noise and traffic of city life and removed from its existence. It's feeling alone but not lonely at 3:17 am when you watch the world go on. It's hope for my future when I leave home. But it's also a reminder of the family I have that lives far away, of the people I love who I can't see, only think of when I can't sleep at 3:17 am. Where they are is home to them and so it is home to me as well.

There are a number of places I can comfortably call home. In the past few years, I've gotten a chance to spend time in these cities and to really discover them for myself.

The series of polaroids are snapshots into my life, glimpses into moments from past years and past journeys. I don't know where I'll be in the future, but the one thing that will remain constant are the people who have travelled with me so far, who remind me of home.

This image of a tiny dragonfly was taken in Croatia. My family came from this little country, and this photograph reminds me of it--my true home. Croatia is filled with lush grass and vast seas. The green and blue colours on the dragonfly represent these attributes perfectly. Croatia may be small, but it is filled with beauty, just like this dragonfly.

I tried to show the beauty of the animal with these bright colours. But I think the why and the how, that's what resembles home for me. Home is a place for me where I can create anything. I feel comfortable and there are no limits. I made this drawing at home, where I can talk with my parents and listen to my favourite music and work on pieces like these. It adds a magic touch of passion to my work.

AP Physics drains most of our lives away. Labs. Assignments. Problem Sets. Tests. We need something to come back to. Something that will let us hold on to who we are. We need a special home to return to, and our music - one quick arrangement or improvisation a day - is what builds it up.
