Monday, August 8, 2022

Dear University community,

  • Our final Dusty Camp is Aug. 18-19. That’s a clear signal that the start of the Fall Semester, Monday, Aug. 22, is upon us. Are you ready?
  • If you’re still pending on some processes, we’ve set aside Saturday, Aug. 20 for “Unfinished Business: A TAMIU Open House and Welcome Day.” It’s free of charge, open to parents and their students, and can help get your Fall in order. Here’s more.
  • A new online ranking has identified TAMIU as the fourth cheapest in-State tuition in Texas and the fifth-cheapest for Out-of-State tuition. We’re thrilled that our commitment to keeping TAMIU Accessible, Affordable and Exceptional is being recognized.
  • With final action pending by vote of Congress, TAMIU will be home to a research Center for Countering Human Trafficking, announced here last week by Congressman Henry Cuellar. This challenge requires data-driven research and investigation…something TAMIU is uniquely positioned to do…and do well with a multi-disciplinary approach directed by College of Arts and Sciences’ dean Dr. Claudia San Miguel.
  • I hope you have taken the time to familiarize yourself with Books IncludED for this Fall. Briefly, costs for required books and course materials are now folded into your semester’s tuition and fees. Find out more on our dedicated website, which includes answers to commonly asked questions in a special FAQ section.
  • Know someone who hasn’t been able to finish their degree because of financial constraints? Our Comeback Programs are helping resuming students to do just that for undergraduate or graduate degrees. There’s nothing like a good comeback story. Go here for more.
  • The TAMIU MBA program has been ranked first among Texas’s Top Five Best Online MBA Programs by OnlineMBA, and we congratulate Dean Steve Sears and his faculty.
  • Use our new TAMIU Fund$Finder, a search tool that helps students find scholarships on and off-campus is available. Details are available at go.tamiu.edu/fundSfinder
  • This week, August 8 - 12, you may hear an occasional building evacuation alarm as inspection and testing of building fire suppression systems is underway. No need for worries, but please treat as a real event and evacuate as recommended.
  • The threat of COVID-19 continues here, across our State, nation, and world. The use of recommended face coverings/masks, and rigorous hand-washing can help reduce your exposure risk. Find out more about on-campus testing.

TAMIU Targets $1.1 M Federal Grant to Fund Center fo Countering Human Trafficking

A new center at TAMIU will conduct research focused on producing evidence-based curricula to help future educators and healthcare workers likely to encounter human trafficking victims in South Texas. The plan for the Center for Countering Human Trafficking was shared by U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, in a press conference at TAMIU. Congressman Cuellar was joined by TAMIU President Dr. Pablo Arenaz, The Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp, University officials, local government officials and community leaders.
Collaborators and partners in the proposed Center for the proposed TAMIU Center for Countering Human Trafficking join A&M System Chancellor John Sharp, TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz, Congressman Henry Cuellar and Dr. Claudia San Miguel, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

“Regrettably, human trafficking is a $150 billion industry, and Laredo and various ports of entry across Congressional District 28 have seen the tragic consequences of this play out daily. This challenge begs data-driven investigation and research. But this is what universities do, and TAMIU’s location, strong faculty research profile, long-lasting relationship with law enforcement agencies, and expertise in international commerce and trade provide us with a distinct advantage in conducting meaningful research which can help others. We’re grateful to Congressman Cuellar and Chancellor Sharp for their keen support in driving this initiative forward.”
