Did you know that girls' confidence peaks at 9 years old?
Girls Retreats help 10-to-13 year-old girls value what's on the inside as much as they value what's on the outside, helping create a foundation and providing them with the skills to grow into confident, grounded young women.
Our Retreats
Our weekend retreats, hosted on the beach in Malibu, CA (Los Angeles area), help middle school girls as they shift from the safety of elementary school to the new terrain of middle school. Workshops prepare girls with a set of tools, a boost of confidence and a dose of self understanding and love as they make this difficult, albeit exciting, transition.
"Trust yourself. Create the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement." - Golda Meir
RETREAT SCHEDULE
DAY 1
On Day 1 the girls look inside at who they are at this point in their lives. They explore and define their own values, what they find important, what they love doing, and the 'inner spark' that drives them. They reflect on where these values came from and who influenced them up to this point.
The girls accomplish this through team building activities, improv games, inner reflection and creative art and writing projects. The day ends with story-telling under the stars about the universe, our solar system, and the constellations we can see at the time. This is done with the intention of instilling awe and appreciation for who they are.
Care is taken each day to notice individual moods and needs and the days are woven organically with physical activity, calm reflection, laughter and healthy meals and snacks.
DAY 2
Now that they have spent a day reflecting on who they are, the girls shift focus onto what they want to develop in themselves over the coming middle school years. They use reflection, meditation and writing to notice what they are drawn to and why. It becomes clear to the girls that the people who surround them powerfully affect who they become.
We take time to help them see what is important to them so that they can consciously pull into their lives the people who will help them down the path they want to go. The girls participate in emotional balancing exercises which help teach them to develop confidence under difficult social circumstances. By the end of Day 2 they have created a resiliency toolkit they can take with them wherever they go.
Care is taken each day to notice individual moods and needs and the days are woven organically with physical activity, calm reflection, laughter and healthy meals and snacks.
ABOUT US
Heather Entis, LCSW has been licensed and working in private practice, in universities and in clinics for 23 years. She currently holds a private practice in both Santa Monica and Calabasas, CA. She holds a Masters Degree from Columbia University and a BA from UC Berkeley.
Heather's approach: Heather's work focuses on developing the whole person, no matter what age. She believes when people are young they come to believe that parts of themselves are bad, and so push these qualities beneath the surface into the subconscious. Because they cannot see these qualities, they begin to believe they are gone, as opposed to hidden from view while continuing to drive decisions and behavior without conscious control. She believes when people can bring these hidden qualities back into awareness, accept them as theirs and eventually see each quality’s importance, they become more whole. Then they can live and make decisions from who they truly are, rather than from who they wish they were. As a mother, Heather wants to pass this information onto her children while they are still young, specifically to her daughter as she moves onto middle school. With this in mind, Heather developed the curriculum for the Girls Retreat. More on Heather's practice: http://www.heatherentis.com
Cora Neumann, PhD has spent nearly 20 years working in development and women's empowerment in the U.S. and around the world. She holds a doctorate in international development from the University of Oxford, UK, and a Masters Degree in global public health from Columbia University.
Cora's approach: Cora is founder of RESET and the Global First Ladies Alliance, and served as a senior advisor under Secretary Clinton at the U.S. Department of State. She has worked for Care.com, the Clinton Global Initiative, the Bush Institute, RAND Corporation, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations, and is a dedicated mentor to numerous young women. Through her work across Africa, Asia and the Americas, Cora has witnessed the critical role women play in a society's ability to thrive. Healthy girls grow into healthy women, who create healthy families, economies and entire nations. She co-leads the Girls Retreats to help bring these lessons home to her own daughter and to girls across her local community. More on Cora's work: www.gfla.org
