TERM 1 WEEK 11 - MONDAY 3RD APRIL 2023

“WE FOSTER AN INCLUSIVE LEARNING COMMUNITY, INSPIRING STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE THEIR PERSONAL BEST BY BECOMING LIFELONG LEARNERS, CRITICAL THINKERS AND HEALTHY CREATIVE MEMBERS OF A GLOBAL SOCIETY.”

LIBRARY BUILD

Exciting news with the construction of our new school library which is due to start during the school holidays. There will be a dedicated senior study area for our year 11 and 12 students, modular and movable furniture supported by acoustic design which will transform our library into a very welcoming learning space. Works are expected to take most of term 2 to complete and so a temporary library space will be set up in room J4. Please be aware due to the size difference some availability of library services may be limited for the coming 10 weeks.

SCHOOL SECURITY OVER THE HOLIDAYS

While some staff will continue to work on site through the holidays it is important to share with our community the School Security Hotline 1300 88 00 21 to report security incidents or suspicious activity. Please note the school phones will be on vacation mode and so the number above will be your best port of call for reporting activity on the site.

HEAD TEACHER WELFARE

Congratulations to Ms Sheridan Hargreaves who was successful in her application for the Head Teacher Welfare role. This is a new position to Banora Point High School and will focus on the student engagement in learning through addressing their wellbeing needs. In schools that excel, there is a strategic and planned approach to develop whole school wellbeing processes that support the wellbeing of all students so they can connect, succeed, thrive and learn.

WELCOME TO GUY WRIGHT

DP CHAT

I am so happy with the year 7 to 9 students. They are working hard to be the best they can be. Being the person who represents them and supports them I couldn’t be prouder. Thank you, years 7, 8 and 9, for making my job one of the best jobs in the world. Please enjoy some of the activities I have had the privilege to work with your young people on.

YEAR 7 CAMP

During week 8, year 7 participated in school camp. What an absolute hoot it was! Our year 7’s were amazing getting involved in all the activities offered to build up connections with each other and their teachers. Students went to epic skate, where they tried to beat Mr Timbs on the rink. I believe Mr Timbs is still king of the rink. They ate pizza, played games, watched football or a movie and slept at school. Much fun was had by all. The next day the teachers dragged their sleepy eye’s around and engaged the students in team building games which made students problem solve together and work as a team to figure out the solution. A big thanks to all the staff and students who took part and made the event amazing.

PATHWAYS ON JOURNEY

Year 7 went on a cultural excursion called Pathways on Journey. Students enjoyed the local cultural stories at Razorback and Fingal heads. Students went on a bush tucker extravaganza where they learnt about indigenous healing plants and foods. We would like to give a very big shout out and thank you to Uncle Franc and Aunty Jackie who shared their knowledge of the local area. I am very proud of our Year 7 group who represented our school in a respectful and responsible way, happy to learn and embrace new knowledge. Well done year 7!!

MARCH IN REVIEW

Students at Banora Point High School have been involved in celebrating and acknowledging the difference in our community. We celebrated Pride, International Women's Day and Harmony Week. When we participate in these events we are showing everyone that we care about each other. These small acts, these individual efforts to dress up in the appropriate colours, participate in these cultural games show that we understand difference, we embrace difference and we want difference!

Ms Lara Hatton - Deputy Principal (Years 7 to 9)

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP PLANTING DAY

IN THE SUPPORT UNIT

On the 15th March, Bunnings Warehouse South Tweed attended Banora Point High School to help the Support Unit plant their expansive vegetable garden.

We were gifted 2 lemon myrtle trees, new gloves, lots of different seeds as well as materials for projects such as large pavers and tiles to mosaic. Some of the vegetables we planted include; eggplant, tomato, lettuce, capsicum, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, spinach, rainbow chard, beetroot, onion, beans, snow peas as well as lots of different herbs and flowers.

We are so excited to watch our plants grow. We will use the vegetables we grow in our cooking lessons, and we will sell some of our produce within our school community. We extend a very big thank you to Bunnings South Tweed Activities Organiser Leah Wright and her team for your time, knowledge and donation of plants and resources.

P&C COMMITTEE MEETING

OUR NEXT p&c MEETING IS TODAY AT 6.30PM

Our committee work tirelessly for our school and their support and assistance is not only very appreciated but it is very valued. It enables us to purchase resources for our students from the funds they raise. We had a very successful first meeting of the year earlier in the month and it was fantastic to see some new faces. Please consider joining our wonderful committee made up of dedicated parents and citizens. It is a great opportunity to stimulate fresh ideas and support Banora Point High School P&C initiatives.

P&C LEVY

Like most public entities, our P&C has overheads such as insurance and state body levies which can inhibit the ability to perform all the great things they do. You will see below, a P&C Levy information sheet around what has been proposed and the reasons why this is necessary. While I appreciate it is difficult to be available for the fundraising events our active P&C team completes, I encourage you to read the information below and help as you can. Ultimately, the stronger our P&C the more they can assist our students.

Please do not hesitate to contact the P&C executive with any queries about the voluntary levy: banorapointhighschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au

THE FACTS ABOUT VAPING

Please visit the NSW Health Department website for all the facts about vaping.

Vapes are not water. The main ingredient in vapes is propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine or glyercol. Vapes can contain the same harmful chemicals found in cleaning products, nail polish remover, weed killer and bug spray. They just don't put it on the pack. Vapes come in a number of flavours such as blueberry or bubble-gum that make them appealing. Many vapes also contain nicotine, the same highly addictive substance found in tobacco cigarettes. Testing has shown that vapes labelled 'nicotine-free' can have high nicotine levels. People can think they are using nicotine-free vapes and can unknowingly quickly develop a nicotine addiction.

We are excited to announce that our school library will be undergoing renovations during term 2 to provide you with an even better learning environment. However, this means that the library will be closed for the duration of the renovation.

But don't worry! We have organised a temporary pop-up library to ensure that students still have access to books, computers and other resources during this time.

We understand that the library is an important resource for all of you, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused during the closure. However, we are confident that the renovations will make your future library experiences even more enjoyable.

Thank you for your understanding and patience during this time.
