Welcome2Womanhood GRAB The Future

Curriculum

Welcome to Womanhood is a curriculum designed to help you navigate adolescence and grow into the powerful woman you choose to be.

Some of the topics we will cover in depth include: puberty, sexual and reproductive health, mental health, female empowerment, actualizing your potential, becoming the woman you want to be by disregarding self-imposed and societal limitations.

Puberty

We'll talk about the changes you will experience as you navigate puberty, including physical changes in your body, hormonal changes that trigger menstruation, behavioral changes, and more.

Many women don't understand how their body works; they simply know that they have a period each month once they reach sexual maturity. We want you to know the physiology behind menstruation, because knowledge is power, and you are on your way to becoming a powerful woman.

Sexual & Reproductive Health

We'll discuss sexual and reproductive health to prepare you for sexual maturation so you'll know what to expect and how to safely prepare for your first experience. We'll also review safe sexuality to prevent infections and unintended pregnancy, as well as resources should you have an unprotected sexual encounter.

This is your body. You're in charge. You get to decide when and what type of sexuality is important to you. We will arm you with the knowledge to choose the right birth control method. We will teach you how each method functions to prevent pregnancy.

Sexuality

We'll also teach you about sexuality so you will know what to expect and how to prepare for your first experience, when the time is right for you with the right person.

Infection Prevention

There are so many ways to prevent pregnancy, but only one sure way to prevent sexually transmitted infections, abstinence, and one very effective way to reduce the chance of infection, condoms. We will discuss both options, as well as all the types of sexually transmitted infections and how they are treated or managed.

Education

Knowledge and self-awareness help tremendously with actualizing your potential. Through daily reflective essays, we will work together to find the path that's right for you, whether that's going to a four-year university, a trade school, or another career path. Our goal when we discuss education and self actualization is helping you remove self-imposed and societal limitations. We want to help you take charge of your future through academic, financial, and family planning goal setting.

Welcome To Womanhood is a component of GRAB, whose mission is to "GRAB" at-risk Durham youth and motivate them to reach beyond their current station to achieve their life goals through motivation, education, and love.

From Executive Director Chauntia Gilchrist: "We envision a safe space for Durham's at-risk youth to learn and practice life skills, talk about their feelings, and express their dreams. We want to support and guide them through every step along the way. If we can help just one child reach beyond the generational poverty they were born into and achieve their goals, we will be their loudest cheerleader. But we want so much more. We want to be the beacon that guides these kids into a life where they believe in their potential and disregard the false limitations that society has placed on them. We envision a future where systemic racism is eradicated by people of color whose inner light shines so brightly, they cannot be ignored."

COVID-19 Protocol

We take the health and safety of our volunteers and youth membership very seriously.

We require volunteers and age-appropriate youth to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination. However, all volunteers and youth, regardless of vaccination status, will be required to wear a mask at GRAB in-person events. Hand sanitizer and face masks will be readily available, but due to cost, we ask everyone to bring their own mask and hand sanitizer for personal use.

We will practice social distancing, without exception, and host outdoor events as much as possible.

All common areas and multi-use surfaces and tools will be sanitized before and after each use, including pens, pencils, desks, tables, chairs, etc.

We will mandate that each volunteer and youth sign into events and attest to their good health: (1) they do not have a fever, cough, or other sign of illness, (2) that they have not been exposed to anyone who has been ill or tested positive for COVID, and (3) that they are not awaiting a COVID test result. This registration list could be used for contact tracing should the need arise. We will also ask that anyone who becomes ill or tests positive for COVID-19 within 14 days of an event to inform us so we can take appropriate steps to inform volunteers and youth of a possible exposure, while keeping the identity of the person with exposure anonymous.
