principal's message

Dear Parents and Carers

As we come to the end of another busy term it is wonderful to celebrate the success and achievements of our students so far this year. Our students and staff have enjoyed a busy and productive term, full to the brim with many educational, sporting and cultural activities.

We've finished the term off with a lot of fun this week with NAIDOC Day Celebrations on Tuesday followed by Year 8 Project Real Market Day and Pyjama Day on Wednesday. For NAIDOC Day students enjoyed a day of cultural learning with arts and crafts, indigenous dance lessons, exploring artefacts and discussing identity, culture and community. Pyjama day and the Market stalls were a big success with parents and neighbouring primary schools coming along to support our year 8 students and their $20 Boss projects.

Today we celebrated the hard work and success of our students at our Term 2 Formal Assembly, with students in years 7 – 11 being acknowledged for placing first or in the Top 5% of their courses. Our Year 12 students, with just one term of classwork to go before their final HSC exams, were acknowledged for their consistent effort throughout the term.

My congratulations go to all students who received awards for their outstanding academic achievements. They should be proud of their efforts and the positive choices they have made to take advantage of the great learning opportunities provided by their teachers. Thankyou you to all students who follow the 'Hunter Sports Way' and continue to try their best at all times.

Thank you to all for a successful first half of the year. We wish all our students, families and staff a very happy and restful school holidays. Have a wonderful break and we will see everyone back on Tuesday 19th July for a fantastic term 3!

Stage 4 & 5

Year 7 Recently completed a gymnastics program where they engaged in balance and stability activities, mini tramp and beam activities as well as basic floor work and vaulting. 2 classes at a time came out for half a day, rotating through all the activities and then undertaking an assessment and self assessment at the end. Year 7 should be congratulated on their application, enthusiasm and general willingness to try new things and use feedback to improve what they were doing.

Here is a link to a quick video that captures some elements of what they were doing.

High Performance PASS

This course continues to teach students basic strength and conditioning requirements to be high performance athletes. Year 9 students have approached the new course with fantastic attitudes and willingness to learn while year 10 students are becoming more confident and autonomous with their programs. This course puts our student athletes ahead of their competitors by enhancing the knowledge, skills and confidence when engaging in S&C which will ultimately transfer to faster, stronger and more resilient athletes.

Mr Trypas has landed some valuable new technology for our Sports Science department being Vald Portable Force decks and Vuemotion Speed Analysis Software. The force decks allow quick and easy assessment of stability, strength and movement. The force decks also enable insights into performance, asymmetries and movement strategies. https://valdperformance.com/forcedecks/

Portable Force decks

Vuemotion is a newly established technology and is revolutionising how athletes and coaches improve their performance. Taken from a simple video of an athlete sprinting the software is able to analyse every process of a sprint including stride length, stride frequency and ground contact times.

Vuemotion

Both of these additions will become a staple in the newly developed HSHS High Performance Unit that will be officially launched in Term 3 through a parent/carer information evening.

HSC Community and Family Studies

Our HSC CAFS class has been busy in Term 2 learning about Parenting and Caring. Some of the fun things that they got to do was paint/decorate/ an egg (not boiled) and design a suitable cradle for the egg. They then had to be “egg parents” for a week - taking the egg with them wherever they went - only leaving it if the egg was in an appropriate babysitters care. This was a successful endeavour with only a couple of minor breakages!

Year 12 CAFS Parenting and Caring Assessment Task

The students also had to complete a Parenting and Caring Assessment Task with one of the major features being to create 10 items in a bag that would be suitable to prepare a social parent for taking on a new caring role. The students provided some amazing samples of work and showed how creative they were! Congratulations Year 12 CAFS.

Sports Uniform Reminder

Practical PDHPE lessons require a yellow shirt and black shorts. Uniforms can be purchased from Lowes. It is an expectation as part of PDHPE policy that students are wearing the appropriate uniform and changing into their white uniform before returning to other lessons. Consistent failure to comply with these expectations can result in contact home. If there are difficulties in obtaining or coming prepared with a yellow sport shirt please let your child's PDHPE teacher know so they are able to support them appropriately.

Music

Our department has been extremely busy this term.

Year 8 classes are learning about the Concepts of Music and beginning their new topic of Australian Indigious Music. They have been working on creating compositions using technology platforms such as Garage Band and Incredibox, and performing popular songs and riffs on keyboard, guitar and drums. Songs include Can't Stop the Feeling, Blinding Lights, and Clocks by Coldplay. A special mention to those students who have excelled in their presentations of Music Portfolios that have included many of the tasks and lesson content that have been worked on during class time. See some examples below:

Year 8 Music

Year 12 are preparing for their HSC Music Performance exam in Week 9 of next term. They are preparing 4 pieces each with ensemble pieces being polished and performance ready. They will be presenting two of their four pieces at our SHOWCASE NIGHT coming up in Term 3.

Interested in studying Language next year?

The study of Japanese language is of particular importance to Australians, both culturally and economically. Japan is Australia’s leading trading partner and there are significant cultural ties between Australia and Japan. Japanese has been identified as one of the priority languages in the Asia-Pacific region to be taught in Australian schools. This recognises the close economic and cultural ties between the two countries.

The study of Japanese contributes to the overall education of students, particularly in the areas of communication, cross-cultural understanding, literacy and general knowledge.

Students can gain access to both the language and the rich cultural traditions of Japan, as well as an understanding of different attitudes and values within the wider Australian community and beyond.

The ability to communicate in Japanese may, in conjunction with other skills, provide students with enhanced vocational opportunities in areas such as trade, tourism and hospitality, banking and finance, technology, education and research, the arts, diplomacy, government, law, media and advertising, translation and interpreting, cuisine and catering.

If you are interested in studying Language as an elective in Year 9 for 2023, speak to Mr Sims or Mrs Knight for more information.

Technological and Applied Studies Faculty Staff update

The TAS Faculty have had significant changes to staffing this term, with two of our permanent staff members taking leave to experience new career paths. We would like to introduce Mr Mitch Peachey who will be teaching Year 7 & 8 Technology and Year 9 & 10 Industrial Technology Metal in 2022. Mr Peachey comes to our school from St Clair High School in Sydney’s West with a wealth of knowledge and experience and our students are completing amazing work with him.

Year 8 Engineered Systems – CO2 Dragster Cars

At Hunter Sports High School our Stage 4 students’ study 4 context areas in Technology over the two years: digital technology, materials technology, food & agriculture and engineered systems. Each context area goes over one semester, where students follow the design and production process to create a project and a digital folio communicating their evidence of learning. In the CO2 Dragster Car project students learn about aerodynamics and the impact this has on engineered designs such as racing cars, boomerangs, and buildings. At the end of the project students race their hand-made cars to win the coveted prize of the fastest Year 8 Racer.

A "Pressing" Issue for science

All of year 7 Science classes were directed to construct a model of a Hydraulic Press and create a poster which would outline their research and features to be in a new Australian designed wool press or car yard crusher press. Teams were created and given a kit which included pop sticks, syringes and tubing and watched a short You-Tube clip to give them design ideas. Students were tested on their abilities to work together, investigate problems and identify the benefits and limitations of creating a model to explain the properties of solid, liquids and gases. Once completed, the teacher then measured the force applied using data logger force sensor to determine the best PSI produced and student presented their poster. Overall, students worked collaboratively, and effectively came up with models that achieved the given outcome.

Well done all Year 7 Engineers!

In Their Element

Year 12 Chemistry students had an exciting opportunity to participate in ExperimentFest this year at Newcastle University. It gave the students practical experience to conduct experiments that complement their learning in the classroom using high-tech instruments that are not found in a regular school laboratory. They had an opportunity to make aspirin, then model how it decomposes in the human body using Infrared Spectroscopy as well as analysing the sodium content in sports drinks using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. Students were very “hands -on” in the university laboratory working with PhD students, lecturers and laboratory staff.

YEAR 9 MARINE and AQUACULTURE

This term in Marine and Aquaculture Technologies, students have been exploring the impact of human activity and pollution on marine environments. They’ve looked at pollutants in the Hunter River and Swansea Channel catchment and their effect on local marine ecosystems. Students have also investigated ways we can combat pollution so that marine environments can be enjoyed by future generations. During this process, students went on excursions to observe the effects of pollution first-hand. During the excursion, students were lucky to observe whales on their annual migration north to warmer waters to breed.

THE WORLD OF WELLBEING

One wave is all it takes

Our Year 8 and 9 students attended a presentation with Grant from One Wave who discussed the importance of taking care of our mental health and each other. He reminded students that it is ok not be to ok and that we can support each other through connection and conversation, and what he is passionate about wearing fluro and surfing (or saltwater therapy as he calls it). Students were very engaged and enjoyed the presentation and stories that were shared.

Thanks again to Byron Williams for coming in to speak to our Year 12 students last week about managing their mental health. During extended roll call, Byron was able to provide students with encouragement to establish good study habits, learn ways to deal with frustration and prioritise time out.

Backflips Against Bullying

On day 1 of Term 3, Year 7 and 8 students will attend a Backflips Against Bullying presentation. The presentation engages students using parkour and acrobatics while addressing bullying issues and providing students with strategies to respond in a range of school situations. Information notes have been emailed home and all students present on the day will attend, there is no payment required.
