ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award

Isaac Steiner from Indiana Wesleyan University has been named the 2022 ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award winner.

Steiner is not only an amazing leader for the Indiana Wesleyan tennis team but for the IWU campus as well.

On the court, Steiner finished his Junior campaign with an impressive 28-3 singles record and 29-6 doubles record. He ended the season as the No. 42 ranked singles player in the nation as well as the No. 25 ranked doubles player in the nation.

Academically, Steiner just graduated in 3 years with Magna Cum Laude honors maintaining a 3.79 GPA. He will start his Maser's Degree next year and is a member of the Kern Leadership Program. This is an accelerated pastoral degree program whereby he will graduate with his undergraduate degree and Master's in Divinity in 5 years.

Within the community, Steiner volunteered at his church at least 10 hours a week mentoring high school students. He was also the Chaplain for his Resident Hall and next year, he will be the student body Chaplain for the entire IWU campus. This summer, he is planning on going to Costa Rica to a Spanish Language training school so that he can better communicate with our Latino players.

A Letter From Head Coach Eddy Shigley

Isaac,

You are an amazing servant leader for both our team and on the IWU campus. You are the strongest most effective young adult leader I have ever seen. You are specially gifted by God in the area of leadership by serving others.

I am excited to see how God is going to use your life for the Kingdom in the coming years. Stay humble and obedient. It is only the combination of confident humility and total reliance upon Jesus that will allow you to be fully utilized by God.

I don't know if you know your career records thus far. They are below. I am excited to see you excel next season for your senior year.

Career Record:

  • First Year Singles: 24-3
  • First Year Doubles: 26-5
  • Second Year Singles: 28-3
  • Second Year Doubles: 23-7
  • Third Year Singles: 30-4
  • Third Year Doubles: 30-8
  • Career Singles Record: 82-10
  • Career Doubles Record: 79-20
  • Total Career Record: 161-30

You finished the year ranked #42 in the nation in singles and #25 in doubles.

You have been named to the First Team All-Crossroads Team all 3 years. You have also been named NAIA Honorable Mention All-American twice.

However, more important than your success on the tennis court I get to see how God is using you on campus and in His Church. One of my greatest joys this year was to listen to you preach and to watch God use you through the avenue of speaking the Word of God.

Stay true to His Word and preach with boldness. I am excited that you are going to Costa Rica this summer to learn Spanish so that you can communicate better with your teammates and to prepare you for ministry to Latino communities for years to come. I know you will be challenged as the Student Body Chaplain this next year but remember to stay both confident and humble and to rely on Christ.

I love you Isaac and am so very proud of you!

Coach Shigley
