WHAT IS CUBOMANIA?

Cubomania is a form of a collage, created using a surrealist method. It mainly uses geometric shapes (cubes/squares) taken to recreate an image in collage form. The image is often rearranged (sometimes with a statistical method) to create a whole new image, or randomly placed in no particular order after being cut. Cubomania also allows an artist to recreate an image and give it an alternate meaning. In a sense, it can, "Subvert the enslaving 'message' of advertising and to free images from repressive contexts," as stated by Penelope Rosemont and Joseph Jablonski. Over time, it has modernized to fit the digital age of today. Now, cubomania is often done digitally.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS?

Cubomania is used to express different ideas and deconstruct images along with its meaning. Additionally, it allows you to focus on specific parts of an image. These, along with the initial intent to, “resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality,” are the ways in which Cubomania is useful to learn.

WHO STARTED THIS?

Gherasim Luca was the maker of Cubomania right before the II World War. He was born on July 23, 1913 in Bucharest, in Romania, the son of a Jewish tailor, Berl Locker, who later died in 1914. He was born into a Jewish family who spoke Yiddish, Romanian, German, and French. In the late 1930’s he frequently traveled to Paris where he found Surrealist artists such as Max Ernst and Jean Arp. Not only was he the creator of Cubomania eh was also a Surrealist Poet and Theorist. In 1994 after living in france for forty years he was kicked out of his home because he had been living there without papers. Being unable to cope with the new situation, at age 80 he committed suicide by jumping into the Seine River

WHAT IS SURREALISM?

Surrealism is the idea of illogical and unnerving scenes by taking images and distorting it to combine the real world with a very fictional, surreal world. The aim of this was to “resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality”. Most of the artwork created in this genre of art portray inanimate objects expressing human traits and emotions in order to express the artist's thoughts. Cubomania incorporates this idea of combining reality with surrealism. Taking a picture and distorting it to combine these two different worlds by Rearranging a picture with no regard for the original. The aim was to "resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality." The dictionary definition for Surrealism is: by which one proposes to express, either verbally, in writing, or by any other manner, the real functioning of thought. Dictation of thought in the absence of all control exercised by reason, outside of all aesthetic and moral preoccupation.

How do you create a cubomania art piece?

What you'll need : A picture, cutting knife, cutting mat, glue, piece of paper about the same size or bigger than the original image, ruler, pencil, computer (if done digitally, follow the same steps while on another platform that allows you to cut/paste).

STEP 1: Grid out your image with a pencil and ruler (back side of the paper). Make sure all your squares are cut evenly with the same area/size, or they won’t fit together in the end.

STEP 2: Cut out the squares on the cutting mat

Think about the style you want to place your squares in- either by rearranging them in any order you prefer or fixing them in a different style with the intent to create a whole new image (not random).

STEP 3: Glue the squares back together in the style you want them, while still maintaining the overall original size of the image. If done digitally, cut and paste the squares into the form you’d like. Similarly, it should also maintain the same overall shape.
