City kicks off First Beer with the Mayor

A mESSAGE FROM fIRE cHIEF sAVACOOL

March is upon us which means spring is just around the corner! Although we still have plenty of snow patches throughout the city, it seems to be melting fast. However, we as a community know that putting our shovels away and storing our snowblowers would be a little premature. History has shown some impressive snowstorms rip through the city of South Lake Tahoe in the month of March. I encourage you all to enjoy the nice weather we are receiving but don’t let complacency get the best of you, winter is not over.

Spring also brings some hidden dangers that are worth noting. With the warmer temperatures comes an increased risk for residential and commercial roofs to unload snow and ice cycles. Be aware of what’s above you prior to engaging in activities under roof lines, including parking your vehicle. South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responds to a handful of injuries involving snow and ice unloading from roofs, some in which have resulted in serious injuries.

On another note, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) typically uses the month of March to do our annual ice water rescue training. The crews use the iced over portions of the lake to practice rescuing potential drowning victims who have fallen through the ice into the lake. This involves crew members getting geared up in dry suites and running through drills that involve various rescue techniques and using different types of equipment. Every year SLTFR is challenged with incidents involving humans or their pets falling through the ice and it's up to us as an organization to ensure that we are trained up to the best of our abilities.

Finally, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue recently held our annual awards ceremony at the Lake Tahoe Airport. We had a wonderful evening getting together to celebrate our past years accomplishments which included the following:

  • Promotion and badge pinning of our Administrative Assistant Sallie Ross.
  • Swearing in and badge pinning of new hire Marty Rider.
  • Chief’s Mauritius Award given to Jake Reginato.
  • Dispatcher of the year award given to Sam Williams.
  • Firefighter of the Year Award given to Haven Wilvers.
  • Years of Service pins distributed to all members.
  • Caldor Fire Challenge Coin distributed to all members.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue wishes our community and visitors alike a safe and happy Spring! “Keep your face always toward the sunshine—and shadows will fall behind you.” —Walt Whitman
