Nursery Autumn term 2 2021

After October Half term all children in nursery returned happy and ready for the busy term ahead, and what a busy one it has been!

The children created poppies using their hand prints. On the 11th November at 11am we observed a 2 minutes silence by watching 'Poppies' on Cbeebies.

Say cheese! We came to school in non uniform and donated money to children in need.

The children learnt how to hold scissors correctly and use them safely. This skill will be frequently visited and extended next half term.

Our key story this half term was Dear Zoo. The children learnt this story and enjoyed retelling it using both words and actions.

Nursery Rhymes are incredibly important in the Early Years as they help children to develop their speaking and listening skills. We celebrated World Nursery Rhyme Week and learnt a new rhyme each day. I wonder if you can remember any of them?

Alongside learning new rhymes the children engaged in activities linked to each rhyme. They developed their fine motor skills by threading bobbins, drew around and named different parts of their bodies, and even created a new web for Incey Wincey spider.

Late one night when all the children had gone home, something very strange happened in Nursery class...

Who was this creature and where did it go? The children searched the Nursery with magnifying glasses and found lots of clues.

The children thought that it was the Gingerbread man because there were lots of flour footprints and crumbs on the floor, but he was still missing. Have you seen him?

In maths we have been counting using 1:1 correspondence and matching amounts to the correct numeral.

This half term the children learnt the poem 'Cup of tea' which they can now recite using words and actions.

Showing the school value 'Kindness', we participated in the Rudolph run and raised money for Barnsley Hospice.

The gingerbread man inspired us when creating our decorations for the Christmas tree festival at the church. I am sure you will agree that our tree looks fabulous!
Spring term 1

After Christmas we look forward to welcoming new children into our Nursery. We know that the older children will be excellent role models when helping the new starters settle into class.

Physical development

Children will continue to develop a comfortable grip with good control when using pens and pencils.
We will encourage children to be as independent as possible when putting on their own coats and zipping them up.
Through ring games children will be increasingly able to use and remember sequences and patterns of movements which are related to music and rhythm.
Using outdoor equipment children will develop the ability to match their physical skills to a range of tasks and activities. For example, they decide whether to crawl, walk or run across a plank, depending on its length and width.

Next half term we will be developing our phonological awareness by:

Spotting and suggesting rhyme and alliteration.
Clapping syllables in different words.

In literacy the children will be introduced to different features of a book:

pictures
writing
page number
front cover
back cover
spine
blurb.

Can you identify any of these on your books at home?

Mathematics

Over the next half term the children will be continuing to master the skill of counting out amounts accurately.
They will be developing and widening their mathematical language by comparing different amounts using the language 'more than' and 'fewer than'.
After reading the stories 'The three little pigs', 'Little Red Riding hood' and 'Little Red and the very hungry lion' the children will be describing familiar routes using language such as in front of and behind.
Over the past term children in nursery have enjoyed sharing their family scrapbooks with each other and retelling personal special events. Next half term this will be extended by developing positive attitudes towards the differences between people. We will explore different countries and cultures that exist around the world.
Our key story will be 'Oh Dear' by Rod Campbell. We will be reading this story and then re-telling it using this story map.
The theme for learning throughout the next half term will be around traditional tales.

Here are some stories that we will enjoy reading together:

Have a wonderful Christmas holiday.

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 5th January 2022.
