Memorial Day is a day of remembrance, when we honor the men and women of the United States military who lost their lives defending our country for the freedom that we are able to enjoy.

Excerpts from "A Proclamation: Prayer for Peace, Memorial Day 2022", signed by President Biden:

"On Memorial Day, we remember the patriots who gave their lives in the service of America, in the service of freedom, and in the service of justice. They made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our Constitution and our democracy. We are free because they were brave, and we live by the light of the flame of liberty they kept burning. They are all heroes, and our Nation is forever grateful.

Those who wear the uniform of the United States Armed Forces know the pride of service and what it means to dedicate themselves to a cause greater than themselves. These women and men put their lives on the line for an idea — the idea of America. They are the best of us. On this day, as we honor the fallen angels who consecrated this great Nation and the ideals that we stand for with their blood, we rededicate ourselves to the unending work of bringing our country ever closer to that more perfect Union for which they died."

"In honor and recognition of all of our fallen service members, the Congress, by a joint resolution approved May 11, 1950, as amended (36 U.S.C. 116), has requested that the President issue a proclamation calling on the people of the United States to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer and reflection. The Congress, by Public Law 106-579, has also designated 3:00 p.m. local time on that day as a time for all Americans to observe, in their own way, the National Moment of Remembrance."

*****

On May 29th, let us all take a moment to join together and remember those who gave their lives serving our country.

A Message from the Fire Marshal

Outdoor cooking season is upon us! Cooking fires are a leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Before you use your grill this year, check the propane hose for cracks or damage from animals. Grease that has dripped onto the propane supply hose can be inviting for small animals to chew into the hose. Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year. Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose. A leak will release bubbles. If your grill has a gas leak, by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off both the gas tank and the grill. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department.

Clean the grill of excess grease; always use a propane tank that is within date. If using a charcoal or wood fueled grill, never use accelerants that are not specified for grilling to ignite the fuel. The grill should be well placed away from the home, deck railings, under eves, overhanging branches, plants, etc. Keep kids and pets away from grills and never leave a lit grill unattended.

Follow the Town of New Fairfield Fire Marshal’s Office on Facebook for more fire prevention tips and news.

Please Do Not Feed the Wildlife

The wildlife that we see in New Fairfield do not need to be fed by you, even though you have good intentions and want to help them. They have specialized diets and their bodies are able to adapt to the winters without much food. You can actually harm them and they can become malnourished and die when fed the wrong foods. In addition, leaving food out can also attract bears and other animals that may not be friendly.

Advice from the U.S. Department of Agriculture:

-Help keep wildlife wild and healthy. Wildlife Services encourages you to avoid feeding wildlife such as ducks, geese, gulls, raccoons, deer, squirrels or coyotes. One way you can help reduce wildlife conflicts with people is by not feeding wildlife near human populations and in parks.

-Animals accustomed to people often lose their fear of people and can become aggressive. Those that become too aggressive may have to be destroyed to protect people and property.

-Many people enjoy living near and watching wildlife. You can help keep animals wild by keeping the following tips in mind.

-Do not encourage wildlife by feeding or leaving food for them.

-Don't allow bird food to accumulate on the ground.

-Don't place food scraps in gardens or compost bins, and use a closed compost bin.

-Keep pet food and water containers indoors, especially at night.

-If you have fruit trees, harvest or dispose of fruit when it is ripe.

-Use metal or durable plastic trash containers with tight fitting lids.

-Enjoy viewing wildlife at a distance. Respect their space and remember they are wild animals that should stay wild.

The best way to be kind to and help the wildlife that share our town is to enjoy their beauty from afar. Let them find their own food that they instinctively know is good for them.
