Black Mountain Elementary School Preparing students for the global stage

Young children shouldn’t have to learn about tragic events, but they do. Some are exposed to disasters and tragedies firsthand, as victims. Others discover the tragedies by watching the news or overhearing adults or other children discussing the events. It is a sad fact that all children need to know how to deal with tragic events—and their parents and caregivers need to know how to help them cope.

Goodbye 21-22, Hello 22-23

Another year has come to an end and in the book of life another chapter closed. We have been blessed to help your child on the journey of their life, to help prepare them for their future. We have been blessed to have shared laughter, triumphs, tears, and every moment in between.

I will forever be grateful for the people that were a part of my life over this past year. I appreciate the effort, passion, minds, and hearts of those who have dedicated their lives to this important work. I appreciate the amazing partnerships and unwavering support of our parents. I can easily say that this unified care and focus on people is something that few school communities experience. I appreciate our students, will never take our time together for granted, and look forward to cheering for them for a lifetime. Thank you for each moment! Thank you for the memories!

I am sad to see this year end, for this exact group of people will never again be together in one place. Still, I am excited about the year ahead filled with opportunities to make a difference in the lives of children and the promise of future moments and new memories that will live forever on the pages of our lives.

“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” ~Dr. Seuss

Seeing your child’s Grades

Report Cards will not be sent home again this year. To view your child’s report card, you will need to login to the Infinite Campus Portal.

Spread the Word!

The earlier people enroll their children, the better it is for everyone. This allows us more time to make staffing decisions and find the best teachers. Everyone also knows that school is better with friends. Spread the word and tell your friends to hurry.

8 Challenges you should take this summer to prepare your child for the upcoming school year:

  1. Help them to be responsible for themselves. All school aged children should have household chores, not to earn money but to learn to be contributing members of your household. We pull our own weight. This summer, when boredom sets in, give them work to do.
  2. How to make a difference. Find opportunities for your child to volunteer. Helping others will help your child build mental and emotional positivity and strength.
  3. Combat escalating depression and anxiety by eliminating social media use completely and limiting screen time. Kids should keep their minds and bodies active. Movement is key mental health. Send them outside to play, the movement, fresh air, and sunlight will do them some good.
  4. Help them learn to be present, to listen, to engage in proper social interactions. Kids should see more than the tops of our heads. We must model what this looks like by putting down our phones or better yet putting them away, looking our kids in the eyes, and engaging. Social interaction must be taught and practiced. One way to provide this practice during the summer is through day camps and overnight camps.
  5. Give your child independence. When children learn to do things on their own and have space to use their imaginations, they learn to navigate problems and build self confidence. Check out these free printables.
  6. Make the library a family favorite. Teach your child that reading is important. By building a love for reading, you will influence their academic life more than any teacher they will ever have.
  7. We often talk about the importance of reading but skip discussing the importance of writing. Writing is one of the best ways for kids to grow their critical thinking skills. So, this summer, have your child become the author that you love to read.
  8. Do not solve their problems for them. Instead, coach them to be problem solvers. Show them that you understand but that you also believe in them to handle the challenges they face. Click here to read a blog post I wrote a few years back. You may have already read it, but it still holds true.
Trying to find something for your child to watch? Here is my recommendation:

I often do not recommend screen time for kids. There is so much wrong these days with television shows for children. They often teach helplessness, poor social behaviors, and unhealthy mindsets. There is one show that goes against the grain that I would highly recommend. That show is Bluey. Bluey imitates real life and provides great lessons of healthy mindsets and character. Give it a shot today and I bet your child (and you) will be better for it!

While far from a complete view of the wonderful learning experiences from each day, below are a few moments we captured from this week. Enjoy!

I apologize for the weird layout. The app used to create the newsletter each week has been a little glitchy. We push it to its limit with the amount of pictures added but hope the occasional blank space or repetition of words doesn’t take away from the experience too much.

This was one busy week!

Here are a bunch of pictures from a week that saw dress up, camping, games, a dodge ball tournament, yearbook signing, and goodbyes.

Former Bobcats and now CSHS Graduates, we’re on campus this week. They walked the campus one last time and were cheered on by the current Bobcats. Then, before they left, they asked for 5 minutes of recess time.

Plan ahead

  • 7/28: Back to School Event (Meet the Teacher and Curriculum Sessions) 4:00-5:30
  • 8/1: First Day of School

The past few years have been tough on everyone! Quarantining & isolating often meant missed learning opportunities for kids and challenges for teachers trying to ensure that each child is proficient at each essential standard. Attendance matters.

I wanted to keep everyone informed that we will be going back to our old attendance policy next school year. I hope that this gives everyone enough notice so we can maximize the learning opportunities available to us. Please take a look at the calendar above and schedule appointments and vacation days so your child does not miss school unnecessarily.

We have already been busy planning and are excited to be able to once again provide daily personalized learning opportunities for students through our Enrich & Reteach program. It has been a few years since we have been able to do Enrich and Reteach so we are thrilled that we will be able to do it again. I can hear the collective cheers from those of you who have been around and know how much this program means. Click the button below for more information about Enrich & Reteach.

Sign up for summer!

This will be a fun one!

REGISTER & VOTE 2022

It’s our Civic Privilege

The ultimate responsibility for our laws rests in our hands. By exercising our privilege to cast our vote at the Primary and General Elections, we hold the power and control for the outcome at the local, state and federal levels of government representing Arizona citizens.

However, that will NOT happen unless we take the time and energy to register to vote, understand the issues, get to know the candidates, and exercise our Civic Privilege by taking the time to VOTE.

The “Mail in Ballot” opportunity offered in Arizona is another manner in which our Arizona citizens can exercise their right to vote – without leaving our home and traveling to a designated “voting location.” Request a “mail in ballot” at your local county election’s office. (By the way: you can also get on a permanent “mail in ballot” list.)

Many of our legislative offices are determined IN THE PRIMARY – not in the General Election (oftentimes due to limited opposition). Therefore, voting in the PRIMARY is critical and essential to the successful outcome of our statewide legislative leaders.

Arizona is in a unique position to offer the opportunity for citizens to vote in an “OPEN PRIMARY.” That means you may register as OTHER (Independent or No Party Preference); CHOOSE a republican or democrat Primary ballot, AND VOTE IN THE PRIMARY (except in the Presidential Preference Primary).

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE: the following timetable indicates the critical dates connected to the Elections for 2022:

  • Primary Election – August 2, 2022
  • General Election – November 8, 2022

*Deadline for Voter Registration: July 5, 2022 Deadline for Voter Registration: October 11, 2022

*Deadline to request Ballot-by-Mail: July 22, 2022 Deadline to request Ballot-by-Mail: October 28, 2022

  • Early voting begins: July 6, 2022
  • Early voting begins: October 12, 2022

For additional information, please contact the Secretary of State’s Office, your County Election’s Office, or visit their websites. Secretary of State (SOS): www.azsos.gov or call 1-877-THE-VOTE (1-877-843-8683) -- locally (602) 542-8683. Visit: Arizona.Vote. From the SOS website under Elections, you can access voter information/register to vote; and our (statewide) county offices to request early ballots and/or other local election information.

Education policies and funding are determined by our political leaders, your vote will shape the educational opportunities and future for all Arizona’s students.

Please Register AND Vote

REMEMBER: IF YOU DON’T VOTE - DON’T WHINE ABOUT THE OUTCOME – It’s that simple.
