Rural Scholars Boot Camp June 20-26, 2016

Kent State University President Beverly Warren spoke with the participants of the inaugural Rural Scholars Boot Camp on the Kent campus on June 21.
The camp gives eleventh grade students from rural Columbiana County an opportunity to experience residential university life. These students have potential to be the first in their families to complete four-year college degrees.
President Warren congratulated the students for participating in this first-ever program. "You are the pathfinders for students who will follow you," she told the group of some 20 students.
"You are Kent State University future students. Don't forget that!" said Beverly Warren to participants in the Rural Scholars Boot Camp.
We know from the research that rural first-generation students struggle with adapting to the cultural setting of college campuses more than suburban and urban students from similar backgrounds. This camp seeks to help students learn to navigate and begin to feel comfortable on a residential campus. -- Dr. Wendy Pfrenger, Program Coordinator
