Douglas County Senior HIppology Team

The Douglas County 4-H Horse Project Club Senior Hippology team recently returned from the National Western Roundup in Denver, Colorado as the Reserve Champion Hippology team. Hippology is the study of “all things horse.” Topics include but are not limited to equine anatomy, breeds, history of horse development, anatomy & physiology, nutrition and feeds, equipment and tack, disease and health management, breeding, housing, and equine business development.

Made up of Claire Wilson, Paige Soper, Kassidy Schumann, and Lakyn Roehrich, the team was third in Team Exam/Slides, fourth in Stations, second in Judging, and fifth in Team Problem Solving. Claire Wilson was sixth in Stations, ninth in Exam/Slides, and ninth in High Point Individual. Paige Soper was tenth in Exam/Slides, Kassidy Schumann was first in Judging and seventh in High Point Individual, and Lakyn Roehrich was third in Judging. The team was coached by leader Bobbie Hinds.

In 2018 the team set a goal to earn the right to represent Kansas at the National Western Roundup. In 2020 they were state champions in Hippology, Quiz Bowl, and Judging. The team began preparing for the national Hippology contest that summer. Unfortunately, the contest was canceled due to Covid-19. However, they moved forward and began preparations for the 2021 state contest. Winning the state contest in 2021, the team was awarded the opportunity to compete in Denver once again.

The team would like to thank the State 4-H Foundation, the Douglas County 4-H Foundation, the Douglas County 4-H Council, the Austin Newell Memorial Fund, and an anonymous sponsor for making the trip possible. In addition to competing in the contest, they enjoyed an afternoon at the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo and sightseeing around Denver.

Douglas County 4-H members enrolled in the Horse or Horseless Horse projects are encouraged to join the club to learn more about all things horse. Club activities include business meetings, classroom education opportunities, and riding clinics to help members become knowledgeable and confident horse owners. If your member is interested in joining, contact Nickie Harding at nharding@ksu.edu or 785-843-7058 for enrollment information.
