TRANSFER STRONG Winter 2022

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to our Winter 2022 Transfer Strong newsletter. We’re excited to share that we welcomed nearly 500 new transfer students this winter! These students join a vibrant, diverse campus that started remotely but returned to in-person teaching and activities this month. And even with the cold and snow, we’re all happy to be back on campus.

As we approach spring (and warmer weather), we’ve been developing new transfer pathways and expanding services in the Transfer Student Success Center (TSSC). In upcoming newsletters, we will share more details about these exciting updates that will demonstrate why Wayne State is the leader in supporting community college transfer students. Until we get together, please enjoy this newsletter as a resource for you, our valued partner, as we look forward to building our partnership.

You can continue to receive the newsletter by visiting Transfer Strong. Be sure to share the link with interested colleagues. The newsletter is sent three times a year (fall, winter and spring/summer).

Best,

Michael Quattro, Director of Educational Outreach and Transfer Initiatives, Wayne State University

Wayne State unveils 2022-27 strategic plan: Our Moment in Time

Following unanimous approval by the Board of Governors, Wayne State University has launched its 2022-2027 strategic plan, “Our Moment in Time.” The plan will serve as a guide for the university’s future initiatives and build on the progress and growth achieved under the 2016-21 plan, “Distinctively Wayne State.”

“Wayne State has grown as a community, and our accomplishments in the last five years are impressive,” President M. Roy Wilson says. “Together, we made significant improvements to our graduation rates, enrolled the university’s largest first-year classes, exceeded our fundraising goals, and so much more. “I am confident that the vision and goals outlined in our new strategic plan will empower us all to carry that same passion and momentum into the next five years and beyond.”

PRE-MED AND HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER

The Pre-Med and Health Science Center (PMHSC) provides prerequisite advising, academic support and professional development strategies for all WSU students pursuing admission to competitive healthcare programs. The advisors who work in the PMHSC specialize in specific areas, allowing them to provide personalized support to students. PMHSC advisors work with pre-med, pre-dental, pre-nursing, pre-pharmacy, pre-physical therapy, pre-optometry, pre-vet, pre-podiatry and pre-PA. Other areas of pre-health advising include pre-OT, pre-radiation therapy technology, pre-mortuary science, pre-radiologic technology and pre-pathologists' assistant.

The PMHSC holds information sessions for most of the areas where advising is available. Attending an information session is the first step to understanding what is required of a competitive applicant. Prospective students and community college advisors are welcome at any of the information sessions hosted by the PMHSC. Visit the PMHSC Information Sessions & Essentials Sessions webpage to learn more about the various information sessions offered and sign up. All information sessions are held on Zoom.

CRIMINOLOGY AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE

Wayne State's Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice focuses on some of the most fascinating topics related to crime and justice including human trafficking, police and society, terrorism, mass incarceration and more. The curriculum provides an integrated appreciation of crime and justice in contemporary society, and our location in the heart of Detroit puts us at a unique advantage when it comes to internship and career opportunities with our community partners. We also offer students the opportunity to participate in our Justice & Society Learning Community, CRJ student organization, Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program and the annual CRJ Career Fair, among other fun and rewarding opportunities and events.

Tips for transfer students:

  • Keep up with important dates such as when the class schedules are posted, when registration opens for you (different dates for different status of students), and tuition due date.
  • Meet with an academic advisor as much as you need; they are extremely helpful.
  • Make sure to check with financial aid that you have received the correct scholarships and that they will be applied to your tuition.
  • Take a tour of campus with friends who have attended prior years, or a tour set up through Wayne State.
  • Make sure to check your WSU email.
  • Get your OneCard before classes start!
  • Find out where your classes are located and, if you are commuting, consider getting a parking garage permit.

What attracted you to WSU: About two years ago, Wayne State and Schoolcraft College made an articulation agreement that made it possible for an honors student at Schoolcraft to transfer into the Wayne State Honors College. This agreement attracted me to Wayne State and to join the Honors College. I was also attracted to Wayne State because I am in love with the city of Detroit and the culture it brings to the university.

Favorite place on campus: Seventh floor of the STEM building. It is my go-to study spot and the view is spectacular.

Post-graduation plans: To be employed by a federal agency, preferably the FBI.

Favorite quote: "Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe." - Gail Devers
