Are you ready to ride with Campbell Law, Crabtree Mall and TREK Bikes this Saturday, Oct. 2?
Campbell Law is hosting its Third Annual Fundraising Bike Ride on Saturday, Oct. 2. The ride, which is co-sponsored by TREK Bikes, Crabtree Mall and the Campbell Law Student Bar Association (SBA), is set to begin at 8 a.m. and offers a 10-mile, a 50-mile or a virtual ride option. The bike ride registration is only $20 for alumni, students, faculty and staff. Onsite registration the day of the ride will be available for an additional $10 so register for the bike ride no later than Oct. 1 at this link. Registration includes a limited-edition 2021 Campbell Law Bike Ride t-shirt and other swag. Following the ride, there will be a free beverage and food along with live music from our partners at Trophy Brewing. Like last year’s ride, the routes will follow the same path and will begin and finish at the law school. The ride is fully supported with rest stops, SAG vehicles and rider sweeps courtesy of TREK Bikes. Participants will receive a bib number and a certificate of completion. Upon registration, participants will be entered into a drawing for a number of great prizes including one-on-one coffee with Dean Rich Leonard at A Place at the Table, $100 gift card for Crabtree Mall, five $10 gift cards to PF Chang’s, $90 bag of bike swag from Trek, an $80 bike tune up, and two tickets to the TBJ’s Fast 50 worth $200. Campbell University Pharmacy School will offer flu vaccines and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines provided by Josefs Pharmacy. Flu shots are free with proof of insurance and $30 without insurance. Campbell Law Alumni Association hosts annual day-long FREE CLE for members on Friday, Oct. 22, both in-person and virtually
The Campbell Law Alumni Association will host its annual day-long CLE from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22. Topics include “The Slow Death of Law Firm Partnership Model: An Exploration of Pre- and Post-Great Recession Law Firm Economics and Drivers Leading to Tomorrow’s Firms,” “The Intersection of the Business of Law with the Practice of Law Post-Covid,” “Enabling ED&I: Your Role, Whatever Your Legal Hat” and “Don’t Crash and Burn: An Aviator’s Guide to Legal Ethics.” Speakers include the Honorable V. Stuart Couch ’96, federal immigration judge; Shiau Yen Chin-Dennis, managing partner for K&L Gates in Portland, Oregon; Norma Barnes-Euresti, chief counsel labor and employment, ethics and compliance for Kellogg; Keith Faulkner, former dean Campbell Law and Liberty Law schools, current dean at Appalachian Law School; Ashley H. Story, founding partner at Troutman Pepper; Thomas Walker, partner at Alston & Bird and former U.S. Attorney. “We are looking forward to welcoming our alumni back to Campbell Law in-person for this year’s CLE,” said Megan West Sherron ’10, assistant dean of external relations for the law school. “However, we had such an amazing turnout out for our virtual CLE in 2020 we wanted to once again offer an online option for folks who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend.” In-person or virtual attendance will be available. Darius Boxley '21 named manager of new sports law clinic, seeking college NIL clients
Alumnus Darius Boxley ‘21 has joined the Shipman & Wright Sports Law Clinic as Office Manager and Legal Assistant. During law school, Boxley worked as a year-long clerk for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). “Darius’ passion for sports and his legal experience with the EEOC and on the NFL Negotiations Team made him the perfect choice for this position,” Dean J. Rich Leonard said. “His experience has prepared him to maintain all the office functions as well as communicate with clients, students, professors and professionals in the industry.” Boxley competed on the law school’s NFL Negotiations Team, where he developed an in-depth understanding of NFL contract formation and constructed contracts for NFL players and placed in the Top 10 nationally. “I’ve always had a passion for the business of sports. I’m excited to be a part of the Sports Law Clinic because it is a great opportunity to learn from one of the best individuals in the business (Mr. Shipman), while helping college athletes realize their value.” The clinic is currently looking for college athletes who need to free Name, Image, and Likeness (“NIL”) representation this fall. Raven Byrne '06 to lead student life, pro bono opportunities
Alumna Raven Byrne '06 has joined the law school as director of student life and pro bono opportunities effective Sept. 7, Dean J. Rich Leonard announced. Byrne returns to Campbell Law after most recently working as an associate attorney with Breeden Law Office, where she counseled clients on a variety of family law matters. “Raven had an extraordinary career as a student here as well as a litigator for the past 15 years,” Leonard said. “I believe she has a bright future in law school administration.” As director of student life and pro bono opportunities Byrne will administratively oversee more than 20 institutional student groups, as well as Campbell Law’s robust and ever growing pro bono portfolio. “I’m excited to return home to Campbell Law School,” Byrne said. “As a student, I was highly involved in both the law school community and community service. As an attorney, I’ve developed an even greater appreciation for pro bono services and community involvement. The Campbell Law Innovation Institute (CLII) will host a formal Launch Event on Legal Innovation and Legal Education from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15, at the law school. The event will be held in person but can also be accessed virtually. The Windar-style virtual conference is free and open to the public. Learn more and register at this link. The Innovation Institute will also host a FREE 90-minute Continuing Legal Education (CLE) event from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct 16, at the law school for attorneys seeking technology CLE credit. Attendees of the CLE entitled, “Responding to Innovations in the Law: Legal Technology Solutions for a Modern Legal Practice,” will learn about advancements in computational law, how the law is being reduced into formal languages to build new applications and automated processes and practical applications of technology solutions to modernize the practice of law, explained Professor Kevin Lee, director of the CLII. “This CLE is intended for North Carolina attorneys seeking technology CLE credits with an intermediate to advanced knowledge of legal technology and legal information standards,” he said. Dean J. Rich Leonard is among the Triangle Business Journal's 2021 CEO of the Year and C-suite Award winners. The Triangle's business community came together the evening of Sept. 22 to honor the award winners during a dinner and presentation held at The Umstead Hotel & Spa in Cary. The event highlighted the work of 21 local executives who have led their companies through challenges, including a global pandemic, and triumphs during the past year. Campbell Law Reporter podcast launches new season
In the first episode of the Fall 2021 season of the Campbell Law Reporter podcast, Jenna Nichols '22 speaks with Durham County District Attorney Satana Deberry about how she has started to change Durham County's prosecution of crime. Deberry began to focus on shifting resources to more violent crimes, reducing pretrial incarceration except when necessary, and using diversion programs. Listen at this link. Dean J. Rich Leonard is proud to announce a new commemorative exhibit, “Judges of Campbell Law,” to honor Campbell Law School’s 142 trailblazing alumni who have earned their place on the judicial bench. “We are so proud of our Campbell Law alumni and their accomplishments in serving as judges throughout the state and beyond,” Leonard said. “I wanted current and prospective students to be able to visualize the sheer number of our alumni who have served on the bench. The individuals featured in our ‘Judges of Campbell Law’ exhibit are aspirational examples and embody the university’s motto of leading with purpose.” An invitation-only event for the formal dedication of the wall to honor the featured judges is planned for Oct. 7.
