Faces and the Garden

Pauline Doyle

Started during the pandemic, these sculptural ceramic wall pieces were inspired by the wild life in Doyle’s Port Moody neighbourhood. At a time when we were all wearing facemasks, she wonders how our animal neighbours might cover-up and protect themselves.

Biography

Pauline Doyle has worked with ceramics as a teacher and creator for 20+ years in the Port Moody area. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from The University of British Columbia and studied Ceramic Arts at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. In addition, Pauline was the Ceramic Artist in Residence at PoMoArts from 2009-2012. During this time, she developed her professional art practice, ran the community studio, and taught classes in ceramic hand-building to adults, teens and children. Her artwork has been displayed in Metro Vancouver art galleries, shops and public spaces and is in private collections on three continents. Presently, she has retired from teaching and runs a small studio on Spring Street in Port Moody.

"I reveal myself through my work. The things I love, my sense of humour, my abilities, my limitations; they are all there to be seen. I find the creative process mostly a great joy but have experienced the gut wrenching stuff as well. Form, colour and the sweet spot are the articles of my faith while creating. I am thankful for the opportunity to share with the world."
Pauline Doyle, Posey the Bear, 13" x 12" x 5.5" Ceramic, $550.00
Pauline Doyle, Foxy Gentleman wears Gloves, 20" x 15" x 4" Ceramic, $750.00

I started this body of work a few months into the pandemic with the idea to create wall pieces inspired by the wildlife in my neighbourhood in Port Moody. At this time, we were all bearing and wearing facemasks to help hinder the spread of Covid19; this made me reflect on the idea of how animals may hide or protect themselves with a ‘mask.’

Pauline Doyle, Ode to Joy, 16.5" x 14.5" x 6.5" Ceramic, $1,200.00
Pauline Doyle, (L-R) Snake in the Grass, 14.5" x 15" x 7" $1,000.00 + Waiting and Watching Be Hell, 15" x 14.75" x 5"75" $750.00; Both Pieces are Ceramic
Pauline Doyle, Tirra Lirra, 13.25" x 13.25" x 9.75" Ceramic, $850.00

Out of this simple meditation came the majority of these pieces in this exhibition. I draw forth these images in delight and wonder of the world passing through what seems at times my storybook backyard.

Pauline Doyle, (L-R) A Look into the Hedgerow, 14.5" x 16.5" x 6.5" $750.00 + True Hope is Swift, 18.5" x 12.5" x 5.125" $1,200; Both pieces are Ceramic

My works are made using a white clay body which I add paper to for strength. They are fired to cone 5/6. I paint my pieces with glaze and underglaze paints in both the green and bisque stages. Some pieces are made whole and fired in one piece; others have portions epoxied on to them.
