Change Agents:

Last week, the Change Agents went to a local Woodend farm to pick some daffodils. Excitement levels were high and all students picked with great energy and joy despite the rainy weather.

All daffodils were left with the Macedon Ranges Rural Australians for Refugees (the MRRAR) who were selling the daffodils to raise money for refugee families in need.

The students had a blast and we look forward to future Change Agent outings!

Tournament of Minds:

Hello, we're Candlebark’s Tournament of Minds kids.

ToM is a problem solving competition for primary and secondary school students right across Australia. There are four domains that students can select a challenge from: STEM, Social Sciences, Performance Arts and last but not least, Language and Literature, which is the category that all the Candlebark teams selected. Teams needed to be made of seven students, and we were given five weeks to develop our solution to the ‘Long Term Challenge’ with NO outside assistance from adults at all. We wrote our scripts and made all of our own costumes and sets. On Saturday 20th August we headed up to La Trobe University in Bendigo to present our challenges in front of a panel of judges. On tournament day we were also given a ‘Spontaneous Challenge’ which we had to solve in five minutes.

Ultimate Pickles

Hi, I’m Millicent ( or Milly ), part of Group One, ‘Ultimate Pickles’. TOM was a super stressful five weeks but it was so satisfying when everything came together in the end. There were highs and lows but I’m so proud of my group for working hard and devoting lunch times, their weekends and Friday clubs. Three people ended up doing most of the script and the costumes, but everyone contributed some great ideas. One member of my group came up with a ridiculously funny inside joke that we are all still saying.

Mango Humas

Hi, I’m Samantha (or Sammy), part of the second group, ‘Mango Humas’ (Humas is a made up word), and let me tell you the experience was exhilarating. Bumpy, but exhilarating. At first, to be honest, I was not thrilled with my group because I thought all the other groups were way better, but now I'm grateful because I got to work with people I had never worked with before. And besides, you get to hangout with everyone at the dance parties. Some of our favorites songs are: Let it Go, You'll be Back, Schuyler Sisters, Fashion Model Art,Into the Unknown, and I Want it that Way. And let me tell you… we all know how to party.

Cowkids

Hi I’m Cooper G, part of Group Three, ‘Cowkids.’ As Samantha has already told you, the experience was nerve wracking, exciting and really, really fun. We spent most lunch times, weekends, school nights and sleepovers concentrating on our script, costumes and props which we had five weeks to complete. My group got through to the State Finals which will be held on Sunday 11th September. This was very surprising but amazing. Overall, participating in ToM was awesome and I would recommend it to other Candlebarkians coming into year five or six.

Chess:

There’s a few new names here today, and quite a few stories in the first round. I am being verbally assaulted by excited youth-nerds wanting to share their fight back from a losing position.

Stand out moments for me are Saffron having a really good strong win on her first ever game, looking for the kill and checking her opponent numerous times. And Orville: with 20 kids watching he fought back and won a hugely pressured game against a more than decent player. Delighted for them. Charlie F a win too, but no details to share sorry.

Back to earth second round. We’ve actually played against ourselves in quite a few of these games. So although we’ve lost some, we actually won them too….

Chae with a strong win on the top table. Have I mentioned there are heaps of secondary students running a parallel competition? The gym is full of chess junkies!

Mia so unlucky to have stalemate from a very strong position. Woody backranked, and we all know and hate that feeling. Haruki first win, Daisy first points! Never quitting, pushing hard. Willow unlucky to get a draw in her last game for the day.

I’ve only just realised that Seba has been quietly going about his business, and is unbeaten for the day, joining Ofek.

Together they have helped our team, the top four players, to score a huge win. Regional Victorian powerhouses, with almost 15 kids going on to state, and hopefully a few more to come from the final tournaments. (Boys have to score at least 4.5, and girls 4)

The girls’ team continues to strengthen, but we need to get more in!

Athletics:

Candlebark sent a primary age team to a local schools athletics competition in Bendigo in August. A great day with many fantastic performances but special mention goes to Mia Greenwood who achieved first place in discus and shot-put!

Footballers:

Three Candlebark students won awards at the Woodend Hawks presentation day for the Under 13C team.

Monty Sampson won the Coach’s Award (not a participation award) - which is awarded to the player who shows the greatest potential and is a true team player. All season Monty played with a positive attitude and he always made a point of selflessly including his team mates. And even though he was probably the highest goal kicker in the team he often passed the ball off to make sure others got a chance at goal glory.

Albert Cahill won 3rd Best & Fairest, the coach said that even though this was Albert’s first season of football he was a important addition to the team and he believes he is a skilled footballer who will only improve in future seasons.

Arlo Coone took out the Best & Fairest award and it was well deserved, he was definitely the best player of the season, often kicking much needed goals for the team. His ability to scoop up the football, dart through a pack of players and get the ball into the forward line was amazing to watch and he shows enormous promise as a footballer.
