2nd Grade Programming

Providing Early Awareness and Knowledge (PEAK Week!)

Students again enjoyed PEAK Week activities this year. Teachers were provided with 3 lesson plans and activities, which centered around four books, "I Know I Can" by Wendy W. Rouillard, “I Knew You Could” by Craig Dorfman, “Mihalia Mouse Goes to College” by John Lithgow and “When I Grow Up” by Al Yankovic.

The books focus on the themes of career exploration, college aspiration, resilience and relationships. Students were given their own “Imagine my Future” workbook to accompany the lessons, along with a copy of "I Know I Can." Teachers did an amazing job bringing these lessons and activities to their students. Thank you to those teachers who shared photos of their PEAK Week activities, including making their own grad cap, alma mater day, and door decoration.

8th Grade Programming

3C's (College, Careers and Cash)

Thank you to 8th grade teachers TJ Somers, Nick Streicher, and Damien Brandon for sharing classroom time allowing every 8th grade student to participate in the 3Cs lesson plans, College, Careers and Cash. This class is designed to introduce students to the wide range of career possibilities. Our goal, after teaching this course, is for students to understand their desire or aptitude to work with either data, people or things.

A Career Cluster inventory is completed by every student and this process generates career possibilities based on each student’s unique strengths. A wrap up highlight is the Reality Check exercise which allows students to select a career and navigate life with the corresponding income. Students are always surprised to learn the costs associated with adulting!

The Love and Support Behind the Programming

Following a two-year hiatus due to COVID, A Call to College staff was thrilled to be back in classrooms this Spring preparing our 8th grade students for Reality Store. Reality Store is a simulation game that provides real-world experience for participants. Each student is randomly assigned a level of education and corresponding income and then charged with navigating life’s expenses (mortgage payments, rent, groceries, etc.) without going broke!

With a small army of volunteers from Park National Bank, Ohio State University Newark, Central Ohio Technical College and Denison University, we welcomed over 400 8th grade students to Reality Store this year. This event would not be possible without their assistance, and they do an excellent job simulating real world scenarios - high pressure car sales, lavish vacation options and unexpected trips to the vet – all in good fun with the end goal of helping students understand what adults already know – life is expensive!

Some of our volunteers have assisted A Call to College for over 10 years! We are so thankful that year after year they return to Newark City Schools for this event. Many of our volunteers share with us how thrilling it is to see students expand their understanding of the world around them. Three cheers for our volunteers - their enthusiasm and positive interaction with students is something we look forward to experiencing all year long.
