In Finland, many schools are very traditional and reflect the brutalist architecture physically, but are working to innovate within their delivery and curriculum.
With an increased focus on wellbeing, there is a change in their spaces to reflect this concern, including creative spaces to relax, be fed (by the school
On average, the Finnish spend 5 years less in school than Australian students.
Trust.
Trust is a part of the culture in Finnish society and education, including students and parents in their teachers and schools.
Students have a highly structured delivery system for compulsory subject matter. You can see below a table of the Distribution of lessons.
Peter also shared with us the level of trust that teachers and the school have in students. Students are able to drive quite young, and jump on their own motorcycles to head off after school. Typical teenage risk-taking behaviour (like wheelies on their motorcycles in the school carpark) is observed, noted and discussed with students in a non-confrontational manner, maintaining relationships with students about their responsibility to their community and themselves!
