What's in a place? Drake Creative experiential design

A place can feel both surprising and organic at once, something that happens at the intersection of culture, history, location, and community. A place like that can become the physical manifestation of a location's mythology.

Upper Landing – restoring a forgotten history

Upper Landing, once a center of commerce and culture for Poughkeepsie, was largely forgotten by the community.

The Dyson Foundation, Drake Creative, and a team of architects, landscape architects, and engineers set out to turn it back into beautiful waterfront.

Creating a park identity derived from history, culture, location and community that worked its way into every aspect of place.

A millstone, seen embedded in the new gates for the park in the previous image, represents Upper Landing's past links to agriculture.

With a goal of changing not only the waterfront but the way people think of the city of Poughkeepsie.

And a space where families feel safe. Over 800 people in a single evening have attended movie nights sponsored by the Millman Harris Romano Foundation (photo courtesy MHF Foundation).
