Mascot

Scarlet Hawks Mascot: Talon

Illinois Institute of Technology intercollegiate athletics began with the merger of Armour Institute and Lewis Institute in 1940, when the varsity programs were called the "Techawks" in tribute to the school's academic emphasis. Illinois Tech Director of Athletics Ed Glancy spearheaded a search for an aggressive symbol in 1973, when campus newspaper sports editor Harv Schultz '73 suggested Scarlet Hawks as the new nickname. The moniker was immediately accepted, and remained in place as the school moved from the NAIA to a provisional NCAA Division III member in 2014, before becoming a full member and joining the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) in 2018. The current costume mascot, a large red hawk named "Talon," was introduced in 2007 at a home basketball game against Cardinal Stritch.

Hall of Fame

Hall of Fame Logo

The Illinois Institute of Technology Athletic Advisory Board is proud to announce the formation of the Athletics Hall of Fame, approved by former President Alan W. Cramb. The inaugural nomination process began in fall 2021, and culminated with a ceremony in fall 2022.

A nomination will fall under one-of-four categories; athlete, coach, team, or special inductee. Nominations will be reviewed by a selection committee made up of nine members appointed by the provost, who will elect a class comprised of individuals/teams from both the historical and modern eras. These nominees must be retired from their Illinois Tech team(s) for at least five years before they can be considered for induction into the Hall of Fame.

The Illinois Tech Athletics Hall of Fame Ceremony will typicallyoccur in conjunction with the homecoming weekend. The Office of Alumni Relations will coordinate invitations on the inductee's behalf; which includes teammates, coaches, classmates and family.
