JSchoolTech News November 2021 Edition

Your monthly source for learning opportunities, tech updates and lesson ideas.

On Our Calendar

I have had some students recently come to me and say "I didn't know that I could make appointments with you for help." Several of them are unaware of resources like the labbies, jschooltech.org tutorials and our virtual JBar. With final projects coming up, this is a good time to put ALL these resources back on their radar.

Telling Stories with Infographics Workshop Nov. 12 10-12. Sign up: https://jourtech.blog.ku.edu/events/telling-stories-with-infographics/

Resource Center and lab times: Labbies will be in the RC evenings 5-8 Monday - Thursday and 1-5 on Sundays.

Virtual JBar still open: https://rockcha.lk/VirtualJBar

Adobe events

Virginia Commonwealth University would like to invite any students from US Institutions to participate in their annual HealthHacks event November 6-7. HealthHacks is a 24-hour sprint of intense innovation and problem solving focused on unmet medical needs. This year’s theme is Reimagining Medical Education: Physical Technologies, Software Design and Products. Additionally, the Adobe XD team will be conducting an Adobe XD Bootcamp pre-event workshop the evening of November 4th. All students are welcome to attend that event to prepare for the hackathon or just attend the bootcamp. The links to register for both events can be found here: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/healthhacks/register

InDesign

Our InDesign content is some of the best we have and is our most viewed. Make sure you are sharing this resource with students if you have them working on projects that combine visuals, media and text. InDesign is the industry standard tool and any student can access InDesign with our laptops / desktops on Jayhawk Wifi.

Contact halawrenz@ku.edu if you would like her to curate tutorials for a specific project.

Premiere

Our Premiere content offers students a 'get started' way to learn video editing quickly and from start to export.

Up Soon

Heather is taking all the delicious new content she got from Adobe Max and turning it into NEW tips and tricks. Watch for it online at jschooltech.org.

MAX recap

I am incredibly excited about a few changes that are only in Beta testing - Creative Cloud Spaces, and Photoshop/Illustrator for web. This will allow smoother collaboration between design partners and groups - sharing assets, resources and offering feedback all in one space. Here are some other hot off the presses updates and content:

Premiere

  • Improved speech to text
  • Captioning
  • Simplify sequence (for those of us with messy timelines).

XD

  • Support for video and lottie files (FINALLY!!)

Photoshop

  • Auto select on hover (okay this was a dream back in 2000 when I was polyganol lasso and quickmasking, but I digress)
  • Share for commenting - this is going to be part of the Photoshop for web release and is a great start.
  • Import Illustrator files with layer structure
  • New neural filters

Illustrator

  • Add 3D effects and textures easily
  • Share for commenting - like Photoshop this is the first stage for Illustrator on the web
  • Select same text
  • Simplified variable widths (trust me, this is an illustration quality of life issue

InDesign

  • Updating language - the term Master page has been replaced with Parent page
  • Scale UI
  • Capture extension
In the next few weeks, I will be creating some tutorials and new features posts for JST online. Stay turned for those. A great way to keep up is to check out our section in the Monday Memo or follow us on social.
