The man in the centre of this photo is Alexander, the person who made the city of Alexandria. With help from his chief architect Dinocrates, the city was founded in 331 BC. Alexandria was said to be the cultural and intellectual centrepiece of the world for some time!

The city lost the significance and intellectual pride as it was plundered years later. Muhhammad, the prophet of Islam, seized control of the city and claimed it as his own. The process of Muhammad's capture of the city involved a time consuming three way war between the Ottoman Turks, Egyptian Mamluks, and Albanian mercenaries.

The Sassanid Persians then attempted to seize full control of Egypt between 618 and 621 AD, starting with Alexandria. They occupied the city of Alexandria, the capital of Roman Egypt, marking the first and most important stage in the Sassanid campaign to conquer this fine province, which eventually fell completely under Persian rule within a couple of years.

The Library of Alexandria was one of the largest and most significant libraries of the ancient world. It was dedicated to the Muses, the nine goddesses of the arts. The library was created by Ptolemy I Soter, who was a Macedonian general and the successor of Alexander the Great.

For those of you looking for a scary yet interesting twist to your visit, come to the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa! The catacombs were named Kom El Shoqafa, meaning Mound of Shards, because the area used to contain a mound of shards of terra cotta which mostly consisted of objects made of clay. These objects were left behind by people visiting the tombs, who would bring food and wine for their consumption during the visit. However, they did not wish to carry these containers home from this death-filled place so they would break them. At the time of the discovery, heaps of these broken plates were found.

Pompey's Pillar is a Roman triumphal column in Alexandria, Egypt, and the largest of its type constructed outside the imperial capitals of Rome and Constantinople. It stands at a whopping 20.46m tall and it's weight is estimated at 285 tonnes.
