Unlocking Geneva some program information

Your Geneva adventure is about to start! Here is some important information about your program.

I will be meeting all of you at your Welcome Day on Friday, February 17, 2023. The day's schedule is jam-packed, so please note the following times when our UC group will be getting together:

10-10:30: There is a coffee break during the morning session. Look for me as you exit the lecture hall (Room MR280) so we can all have coffee together and meet each other.

Photo so you can identify Shelby :)

There is a short lunch break 11:40 - 12:15: Vouchers will be given for us to dine in the cafeteria. Let's use this moment to eat together and I will share program information with you over lunch. At 12:15 you will go to the GSI session (UniMail room M2160) after which I'll see you again at the UC-specific orientation:

The mandatory UC-specific orientation will be held 1:30 - 3:30 pm in classroom M2020.

ACADEMIC INFORMATION

Your course load will look like this:

Five courses: International Geneva Course = 6 UC quarter units or 4 UC semester units (mandatory) + French course at La Maison des Langues which includes 2 themed sections = 5.5 UC quarter units or 3.7 UC semester units (mandatory) + 3 seminars/electives = 5 UC quarter units or 3.3 UC semester units each

For Internship students whose internship begins mid-March - April: If your internship begins during the spring academic term between mid-March to late April, you may elect to drop one of your elective courses (take four courses instead of five). You must remain enrolled in the International Geneva: Issues and Institutions course and the French language courses. Do not drop a course without first consulting with the Study Center to advise on and approve the drop as there are implications at the UNIGE level to a drop. The deadline to reduce course load to four courses is April 28th.

Minimum unit load = 26.5 UC quarter units or 17.6 UC semester units

Internship (if applicable) = 9 UC quarter units or 6 UC semester units, P/NP only

MOOC courses and courses at a Master’s level are not open to UCEAP students

Do check with each of your professors that you will be getting a grade for their course. You may enroll in a course which is graded on a P/NP basis but check with your campus major advisor first! Typically courses taken for a P/NP may not be used to fulfill any degree requirements.

French Language Classes at La Maison des Langues - Uni Pignon

French language classes begin the week of February 20th. You can test courses all this week Feb 20 - 24th

Deadline for French course registration: February 26th but don't wait until the last minute: you may not get the classes you want

Please read this information page which includes an optional language level self-evaluation test (fee required) as well as French course descriptions

You register for your French language courses here, deadline February 26th. This gives you one week to "shop" your French language courses. (Ignore the part about payment; these courses are included in your program fees.)

There is an information session on Monday 20 February 9:00 am in classroom MS150. (Sous-sol, or minus 1, Uni Mail building.)

You can view French course levels and meeting times here.

Depending on your level, courses will meet either 2 hours or 4 hours/week

Oral/written/grammar themes are taught separately and you need to take two out of the three themed sections of the course, but you can take them at different levels.

The two French courses total 5.5 UC quarter units or 3.7 UC semester units.

Your UCEAP Study List, or how your courses transfer back to UCEAP

For UCEAP, email me the finalized list of all your courses as soon as you lock these in. I will be in Geneva April 19-21 for individual academic meetings where we go over your course list and any questions or concerns you might have.
