Tournament of Minds:
On Sunday, one of our Tournament of Minds groups headed to La Trobe Bundoora for the State final. Spirits were high and snacks were plentiful.
It was a high-pressure situation where teams were given a challenge, a room and three hours to come up with a dramatic solution.
After this intensive period, a lunch break was given and students were encouraged to relax before the presentations. Our Candlebark team chose to use this time to stand on a high ledge in the middle of the university courtyard and entertain a few hundred people with a lively rendition of ‘Let it go’ from the musical Frozen. Never a dull moment with this lot!
Around 2pm, all the teams headed into the presentation room and watched all seven teams perform.
Our Cowkids team gave a highly engaging performance which featured a devious troll being defeated in an epic dance-off battle.
Unfortunately, they didn’t win the tournament but it was an unforgettable experience and almost all students have voiced their intention to have another go next year.
Hooray for ToM!

The Library's 11th Birthday Celebrations
CANDLEBARK LIBRARY'S 11TH BIRTHDAY
Candlebark Library was officially opened on September 7, 2011. The 10th
birthday celebrations were interrupted by COVID. However, finally, we were
able to invite three creators to the library, and enjoy birthday cake - Thank
you Marisa!
Ann James and many of Australia's best-known children's book creators
attended workshops on writing and illustrating, hosted by John, at The Tye
Estate before Candlebark School occupied the property. Ann James and Ann Haddon
established Books Illustrated to promote and support Australian
illustrators, and they returned to visit us and celebrate the library's
birthday. What fun! It was wet and muddy - just perfect for a reading of I'm
a Dirty Dinosaur, followed by the Preps and Grade 1s drawing with magic
pencils and painting with mud!
The photographer and illustrator, Lorena Carrington, ran cyanotype workshops
with the Grade 5/6 and Year 7 classes, showing them the techniques and
secrets involved in her illustrations of fantastic creatures and forests.
The author of The Grandest Bookshop in the World, Amelia Mellor, entertained
the Grade 5/6 and Year 7 classes with stories of E.W. Cole and the Cole's
Book Arcade. A considerable number of these students had read the book last
year, including Kate Tucker's class who had explored the Melbourne locations
associated with this fabulous shop. A special treat was Amelia's
collection of memorabilia, original copies of Cole's Funny Picture Book and
Amelia reading a chapter from the soon-to-be-published prequel : The
Bookseller's Apprentice.

Book Week
CBCA BOOK WEEK 2022
The Boy and the Elephant, a wordless picture-book created by Freya Blackwood, gently tells the story of a boy who attends a school without trees, but has a favourite tree shaped like an elephant next door to home. This was popular with students of all ages. During morning-meeting, we looked at each page while cellist Zoe Barry played the music she had composed to accompany the book. Everyone in the room was mesmerised. Then we looked at the Story Box Library video of Zoe playing, with added sound effects. I would recommend that all families watch it - https://storyboxlibrary.com.au/stories/the-boy-and-the-elephant
Thursday’s meeting during Book Week featured Stellarphant, a picture-book about an elephant who wants to be an astronaut. The students had great fun posing with the space rocket and an astronaut outline – thanks to Blizz for the drawings. Then there was the parade with plenty of Harry Potter, Roald Dahl and Disney characters, plus a Princess in black, Sally Rippin’s Polly, a Wild Robot, a crew of astronauts and more.
Both the CBCA website and Story Box Library feature students from Candlebark and Alice Miller in the announcements of the 2022 Book Awards and the Shadow Judges’ Awards. Our thanks to Nicole Brownlee.
