J. Dan Brown Family Player Development Center at University of Texas City of Austin, TX

Architect DLR Group

Total Construction Cost : $8.3 M

Square Feet : 22,000

Project Description:

The J. Dan Brown Player Development Center can be seen as a metaphor for the entire Longhorn baseball program. From the outside, the building expansion is confident and well-defined, with strong lines and a clean appearance. It fits seamlessly with the existing stadium, utilizing similar materials while taking on some modern touches and subtle details. From the inside, large volumes connect well-defined program spaces, and provide a wow factor that was not apparent from the outside.

The upper-level mezzanine serves as the main organizing element and provides vantage points down into the weight room, hitting cages and pitching lab not available in most training facilities. Industrial yet modern materials speak to the program’s philosophy of combining old-fashioned hard work with cutting-edge technology in order to maximize results. Environmental graphics are seamlessly integrated throughout the spaces and tell the rich history of the program while reinforcing the modern Longhorn brand in a way that is exciting for both current student-athletes and recruits alike.

This facility allows the University of Texas’ storied baseball program to take the growth of its student-athletes to a higher level, just steps away from their home competition venue, UFCU Disch-Falk Field, which was renovated by the same design firm in 2008. The new facility connects directly to the existing locker room and provides a separate signature entry just for student-athletes.
